ADMIN: The Scars Challenge

This is one that julad suggested a while back (after a conversation in which she claimed that, if John and Ronon compared scars, John's would be all dorky, like "the time I hurt my leg with the stick," and "I had this puppy and it bit me here" and "this is where I cracked my head drinking too much tequila first semester in college and falling down the stairs of the freshman dorm," and "this is where my sister hit me." And Rodney's would be all, "here's where I cut myself on the inside of the particle accelerator" and "here's where I burned myself in chem lab" and Ronon would be all eyerolling and "I can't believe I even hang out with you people." And Teyla would be sitting there all quiet, and when they realize that and look at her, she looks away fast.)

Anyway, that's what gave us the idea of narrating scars, and you know, Julad might be wrong and John might have OMG scars whose story must now be told! And Teyla. And Ronon. And Rodney and Carson and everyone else.

So, um, that's the challenge. It's May 3rd; stories will be due on May 17th at midnight eastern.

I would like to request an I Love The 70s challenge.

Star Wars, Vietnam, Kavanagh as the only scientist without a ponytail, kidfic. John as a disco dancer all, "Will ya watch the hair?" And of course nobody does an energy crisis like Atlantis.

Because John's free as a bird now (and this bird you cannot change!), and Rodney's so vain, he probably thinks this song is about him.

Oh, while I'm at it--might I bandy about a nice backstory challenge (I'm in no rush, but it's been on my mind)? Something from someone's past..... Radek behind the Iron Curtain, Rodney blowing up school labs by 8, John's disastrous relationship history, Teyla's dad, Ronon's life on Sateda, anything!

You know, I have the perfect short-piece I've been meaning to do along this vein (ever since I cut up my hands while getting training in the electrical trade; wall panels = evil). I love flashfic, because it lets me exorcise some of this stuff without actually having to write 8,000 words.

I'm not clear from the challenge description -- do the scars need to be narrated, or can they just play a prominent role in a story that's not explicity 'this is how I got this scar?'

I want to see a Childhood challenge! It could be combined with the backstory challenge suggested above, but for myself I really want to see some kid stuff, some formative events. Teyla getting her first lessons in stick-fighting or interplanetary trade with her father; twelve-year-old Ronon being scolded by a mother already shorter than he is for playing with toy guns; Rodney as Little Man Tate in one of those math-prodigy competitions; John leaving the ground behind for the very first time in a commercial jet or his father's friend's small plane or whatever. Elizabeth's first puppy? Carson and his mum? Or maybe childhood traumas big or small, or the first steps into adult independence -- any of that stuff.

foxxcub, khohen1, and I would like to suggest a "Grunt and his/her Scientist" challenge. Stories about John and Rodney, Cadman and Beckett, Lorne and Parrish, and all the grunts and scientists we haven't met yet! Rules for caring for a grunt/scientist, how to find your very own, what to do if an alien priest(ess) tries to steal or seduce him/her! Fics to answer the questions: who is Radek's grunt? Is it Ronon? Does Teyla have a scientist? Does she even count as a kinda-grunt?

Oh, the possibilities;)

I've been thinking about a challenge that would fit in with the back story and childhood ones mentioned above - a Pre-Rising challenge. It would be more general than the other two, and you might think it is too general, but I'm hoping not.

Personally, I would love to read some crossovers with SG1 (eg more about Elizabeth’s time at the SGC, or Rodney gets to work there again for some reason, that sort of thing), as well as some first time meetings (Elizabeth meets Carson or Rodney or Grodin, Rodney meets Carson or Grodin etc - you get the idea!), and even some AU meetings between characters would be nice.
