Summary: Rodney doesn't have friends, partially on purpose.
"Rodney?" said Annie.
"Hmmm?" Rodney didn't look up from the telephone he was dismantling.
"How far is it to the moon?"
"In kilometers or miles?"
Annie cocked her head to one side as she watched him. "Both."
"384,403 kilometers, and 238,857 miles. Why do you want to know, anyway?"
"Just because."
Rodney wrinkled his nose at her. At seven, Annie could barely do long division, which was lame, because Rodney was two months younger than her and was doing trigonometry. But she shut up when he told her to, and she didn't care that he was smarter than her, so he guessed that made them friends. "Why don't you stop asking stupid questions and hand me that screwdriver?"
Annie handed him the screwdriver and leaned over to see what he was doing. "So how come you're taking the phone apart?"
"For the parts." Rodney tried to figure out how to get one component loose. It looked like it had been soldered together. He settled for hitting it with the handle end of the screwdriver. "Gonna build something with them. Don't know what yet."
"You could build a toaster."
Rodney looked up from his work. "Why would I want to build a toaster?"
"So we could make toast," said Annie. "I like toast."
"That's a stupid idea. I have a better one. Let's play a game."
"Is this the 'how long can we hold our breath' game? Because I'm not allowed to play anything that might make me faint."
"No. This is a better game. It's a number game."
"I don't wanna play a number game. You always win, Rodney."
"So?" asked Rodney.
"So I want to play something I can win."
"Go fish?"
"You always win that, too."
"It's not my fault you can't figure out basic probability theory."
"What's that?"
"It's something that lets you win at go fish."
"Can you teach me?"
Rodney finally pried the part he wanted loose from the phone and set it to the side. "What's twelve times twenty-seven?"
"Ummm...." Annie looked up at the ceiling as she thought about it. "A really big number?"
"You need to know the answer before you can learn probability. Sorry."
"'Sokay. We could play House." At Rodney's look, she added, "Or Dinosaurs Hunters Lost in Time."
"Dinosaur Hunters is fun. Ooo, we could get sent to the future and hunt alien dinosaurs."
"Are alien dinosaurs as dangerous as real dinosaurs?"
"More so," declared Rodney. "Because they're smart."
The talk was interrupted by the sounds of laughter and bike wheels. Rodney looked down the road. "Uh-oh. That's Davey."
Annie grabbed his wrist. "We can go to my house. My mom'll let us play inside."
"Too late, he's past your house. We'd have to go past them."
"We could go in the backyard. They can't get us there."
Rodney shook his head. "My mom doesn't want us back there."
They stood in Rodney's driveway, backing up till their backs were to the garage door, and watched the four older boys come closer. The boys went past on their bikes and then circled back. One of them called out, "Hey, look! It's the freak and his girlfriend."
Rodney's hands clenched into fists at his side. Davey and his friends were ten. They were bigger and stronger than Rodney, and they had bikes. They also enjoyed making Rodney's life miserable.
"C'mon, freak, come out and play." Rodney didn't answer, and one of the boys brought his bike to a stop at the end of the driveway. "Not just a freak, but a baby, too."
"Shut up!" said Rodney. "Just shut up."
One of the boys laughed. "Ooo, we're scared now, freak boy."
Davey picked up a rock off the ground. "Hey, brainiac, think fast!"
The rock missed Rodney. There was a cry. Rodney turned to see Annie with her hands pressed to her forehead. The older boys took off, one of them yelling, "Shit! Let's go before we get caught."
Annie whimpered as he pried her hands away from her head. There was blood on her palms and, as he reached up to touch the spot where the rock hit, on his fingers. Rodney went quiet. He was used to getting picked on. It wasn't even the first time they'd thrown stuff at him. But Annie wasn't supposed to get hurt. Suddenly, Rodney was angry. He shoved Annie to the ground. "Do you have to be so stupid?"
Annie started crying, which just made him angrier. "Go home, Annie! I never asked you to come over, anyway. Just go home and leave me alone! Stupid girl."
Annie scrambled to her feet and ran down the road towards her house. Rodney plopped down on the driveway. He picked up bits of the telephone and chucked them across the yard. "Stupid girl. Didn't ask you to act like my friend. Don't need friends."
Rodney didn't need friends. He needed a way to keep Davey and his friends from bothering him. Like a catapult. He threw another piece across the yard. Or maybe a bomb...
