But I also don't think Rodney had an ulterior motive, per se. I didn't get the impression that Rodney was expecting undying love. However, that could be a reading fostered by John's pov. He wouldn't have noticed or cared if Rodney actually was expecting undying love.
I did get the impression that Rodney was expecting more consideration than he got, and doesn't hoping for or expecting more than we get happen to each of us everyday? In the same way, we often get more than we hope for or expect. Hopes and expectations are certainly as human a failing as being inconsiderate.
While icarusancalion said that Rodney wasn't vulnerable, I think he was: naivete is the most potent vulnerability there is. However, one suspects Rodney's a lot less naive now. I'd really like to see him steer clear of this John in the future, and I enjoy thinking he's got enough balls to choose better treatment.
