Aah, but remember. They're not all bound to Atlantis - only those who had the artificial ATA. Those with the natural gene have the physiological ability to reabsorb the ATA-S chemical; they didn't realize you needed a second genetic component to do it. So Sheppard can spend periods on Earth if necessary. His kids could. So could Miko's. They'd still get step-down effects, but non-lethal.
