You really should try "Anonymous Rex". It wasn't quite good enough to get me to read the sequels, but the initial novel is still intriguing.
Knowing your wide-ranging and unusual interests, you should look for a recently published book called "Three Bags Full". I can't recall the author's name...but the book is a mystery novel from the POV of a flock of sheep, and has some really interesting philosophical concepts.
