Then I think we should just be glad that John did got to Atlantis, at least the John we know. He's caused galactic mayhem, but he's also a much healthier person (well, okay, that might be stretching it. Still!). The John in Atlantis has a purpose and a focus to his life that was desperately lacking on Earth, and faltering steps aside, it's done him a world of good.
