Yep, sneaking this one in under the wire.
John didn’t care that he wasn’t invited and almost certainly not wanted as he stormed unannounced into Major Lorne’s quarters. He didn’t care that he still didn’t know exactly what he was going to say as the door closed behind him. And he absolutely did not care how unprofessional it was to give his XO a dressing-down while he was in his own quarters, off duty, and under medical orders to rest.
Lorne was standing by the window, his back to the door. John stopped a few feet away and waited for Lorne to face him, growing angrier every moment Lorne kept him waiting. He was ready to order Lorne to face him when Lorne slowly turned to face him with a quiet sigh.
John stared, his tirade suddenly forgotten.
He knew Lorne had been injured on M7X-719 when the mission went pear-shaped, and that Carson had released him from the infirmary on the contingency that he rest for the next two days. The scrapes and bruises weren’t a surprise. He had expected Lorne to be tired, even exhausted, as he came down from the adrenaline that had kept him going until he made it back to Atlantis.
He hadn’t expected to see the utter resignation and defeat etched on Lorne’s face.
John stood silently, the last of his fury having burned itself out, leaving a cold knot in his stomach in its wake.
Lorne had very nearly returned to Atlantis in a body bag, if he had returned at all.
“John,” Lorne started.
John shook his head, focusing on what was, not what could easily have been. He took the remaining steps that separated them and pulled Lorne, no, Evan, into his arms.
John couldn’t continue to pretend that he and Evan were simply a convenience, each the other’s dirty little secret hidden from the Air Force as they held each other. He didn’t know exactly when it had happened and, in the end, when didn’t matter. All that mattered was his lover had been able to walk away from a mission.
They both knew how dangerous Pegasus could be. Odds were good that one day one of them would be carrying the other’s body back to Atlantis. John could only hope that they both would be able to stay one step ahead of one day for a very long time.
John brushed his lips over Evan’s before reluctantly pulling away. He had turned to leave, to let Evan get the rest he needed, when Evan took his hand.
“You don’t have to go,” he said quietly.
John nodded, following Evan. They settled in bed, John’s chest pressed against Evan’s back, his arm draped over Evan’s chest. John lay awake, listening, feeling Evan’s breathing slow as sleep claimed him.
One day had not been today. It wasn’t much, but it was enough.
