It is pitiful, McKay decides, just how much he wants his
sister. He knows he can’t have her- He’s thirty six, she’s forty one and not
only are they in different galaxies she’s probably in a war zone- but he wants
her, all the same. He wants her too tell him that their step mother is a
jealous bitch with all the morals of an alley cat, who’s sleeping with half of
John
When the red haired woman had appeared, John’s first thought was that if this was McKay’s worst nightmare he didn’t want to know where the Wraith came in on the scale. Then she’d started screaming. Screaming and yelling and raining abuse down on his head, calling him things that John had only heard from his father when something really serious had happened –the Welsh Dresser had fallen on his foot, for instance. McKay had seemed to shrink even as they watched. In the end Bates had shot it, and so had ford and Sheppard, when they’d finally remembered that they were holding guns, and it had exploded.
“Who was that?”
“My step-mother,” he’d replied, voice clipped, and then he’d run.
Sheppard had barely heard Ford explaining the concept of a
step mother too Teyla, he’d just looked at
When they reached McKay’s quarters the door had slipped open at John’s command. McKay was sitting inside, staring at the last page of an ornate leather album. It showed at tall woman with pale blond hair and eyes that John thought he’d seen somewhere before. She was holding a strangely familiar baby, and had a small clone clinging to her. Then McKay looked up, and John had a sudden feeling that he was intruding, that he should leave, now, because there were tear tracks down McKay’s face. Then Teyla pushed past him, and hugged McKay for all she was worth.
Teyla
Teyla is confused. She does not understand the concept of a ‘step
mother’, in the Athosian Tradition once your lover is gone, you do not take
another. She does however, understand that McKay’s father remarried after his
mother either died or left, and that his new wife, instead of nurturing and
protecting the children of the first marriage, chose instead to belittle and abuse
them. It makes her feel strange, half furious, and half sick. She does not want
to believe anyone can treat a child that way. But apparently McKay’s step
mother did. She realises the identity of the woman whose picture McKay is
looking at immediately- not only does she share McKay’s eyes, she shares his
mouth, nose and posture as well. She also realises something else. Even in the picture,
it is clear that the woman loves her children so desperately, so fiercely, that
only death could keep her from them. Something tells Teyla that death took the
woman less than five years after that picture was taken. She doesn’t know what
prompts her hug, only that her team mate is hurting and she has to be
there for him. Now. He collapses against her, almost bonelessly, and she looks
over his shoulder at Ford and Sheppard, still standing in the door, not knowing
what to do. Sheppard looks as if he is unsure, apparently believing that he is
intruding, Teyla holds out her hand, and waits.
