ADMIN POST: The Personal Item Challenge

A bunch of you have been clamoring for this one, including les342 who said:

"I would like to see a personal item challenge. In Hide and Seek we learn that each of the expedition members were each allowed to bring one personal item and that Shep brought his football videos. What about everyone else? We should have a challenge where you have to write about someone else, what they brought, and why they brought it."

It's worth noting that kmanderson replied that "Shep seems to have smuggled a bunch of other personal items in as well, such as "War and Peace" and his poster. I imagined him smuggling them in hidden in his pants, since they always seem to be so roomy..." It's true that they don't exactly seem to stick with the 1 personal item rule, but for the purposes of this challenge, the personal items should be limited and special, and if your character has more than one, they SHOULD have been smuggled in Sheppard's pants or somewhere equally roomy. *g* So feel free to give Shep something special beside his football videos, or to give Rodney two special things, but we're going to treat them like the lousy smugglers they are and presume that they didn't arrive in Atlantis openly pushing a wheelbarrow of CDs. As Hth said in her request for the challenge, "I want a story about something that some one either spent their space on or smuggled through the Gate."

Today's August 12th; stories will be due Friday, August 26th at midnight.

I'm curious as to whether, due to the constraints of the challenge, the stories must be set in exclusively Season One, or whether they're allowed to reflect the fact the Daedelus has clearly done at least one supply run for Atlantis, which would have also included personal items given that semi-permenancy of the expeditions assignment.

I'm tempted to say yes, but I could hypothetically imagine a season 2 story that worked. The important thing is that the item be important, so that, as Hth said, it had to be chosen at the expense of other things and/or smuggled in. If it's the kind of thing you could pop home and get--and now they've all popped home to sg1, haven't they?--it's not the same kind of thing. But I'd rather be open than proscriptive: if you think your story fits the spirit of the challenge, go for it.

Anyone who brings along a wheelbarrow of CDs needs to be pantsed by the scientists anyway. Dear Jesus, have these people never HEARD of mp3 players? Not everyone can manage Ancient technology, fine, but I think that anyone who doesn't have the basic tool-using capabilities required by iTunes needs to have all pointy objects removed from their vicinity and also, oh! Not to go to the Pegasus Galaxy!

As a suggestion for a future challenge:

The Skippylist Challenge: where someone has to write a story about someone in Atlantis doing something or referencing something from that list. Can be explicitly mentioned, but bonus points if it isn't.

Hee, I've been quoted! Shep's pants are just full of surprises, though. I'm sorry to have missed the challenge this time though (was on Internetless vacation), so I hope there will be an amnesty challenge for this season as well.

Is there anyway I can post this after the two week deadline? I've been working on my entry, but it's just not coming together the way I'd hoped it would. I should be finished soon and have my beta reader all lined up, waiting to beta read, so it should be done in a day or two.
