Evan Lorne liked to think of himself as a man who wasn't easily stunned by events, as someone who could keep a level head no matter how boringly mundane or inexplicably odd the situation was. He knew when to step back and loom threateningly while Weir was trying to negotiate, and when to step forward and place himself between John and anyone with a higher rank. He'd dealt with hostile aliens, friendly aliens, naked aliens, and just plain disgusting aliens. He'd kept his cool when tossed in a Genii prison, when his botanist had discovered sex pollen, and when his lover had nearly gotten himself killed by riding an asteroid down to a planet. He'd commanded the first and only Ancient starship humans had possessed, and after it was blown up managed to keep himself from getting KP for all eternity. He'd talked his way out of dozens of tense situations without bloodshed and only the occasional shedding of other bodily fluids. Evan Lorne was, in short, capable of dealing with anyone and anything that fate could throw his way without so much as blinking.

Almost anything, at least. John Sheppard had a special knack for knocking him for a loop, and there was a certain twisted logic that he'd manage to do on a mundane visit home. It also figured that it would involve an attractive blond woman all but throwing herself out of the door of John's parents' house to latch onto John like a horny dog.

"Uh, hi there," Evan eventually managed to say. One part of his mind was saying, "Maybe he has a sister," while the rest of it was shouting phrases like, "we're off-world," and "alien princess" and "never sees it coming."

The woman let John go and held out her hand, a broad smile on her face. As he shook it, Evan couldn't help but notice that John had suddenly acquired the sort of 'oh shit' look he only got when Weir caught him and McKay doing something especially outrageous.

"Major Caroline Danvers, USAF." Evan raised his eyebrow and waited for the shoe to drop, and after a moment she added, "John's ex-wife? He did tell you he used to be married, didn't he?"

Evan's diplomatic skills kicked in, and so rather than using any of the words Doctor Zelenka had taught him, he smiled. "No, not so much."
