Lost in Waiting by Lacey McBain, NC-17 [Virgin]

Title: Lost in Waiting
Author: Lacey McBain
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~14,800 (I know!!)
Timeline: Set vaguely in the middle of S2 - definitely post-Runner, but with references to S1.
Summary: "You can’t have it both ways, Colonel. If you haven’t had any relationships, either you’re having the occasional one-night stand or you’re not having sex at all.”
Disclaimer: SGA doesn't belong to me. But you already knew that.
Author Notes:: [livejournal.com profile] torakowalski said she'd really like to see a realistic Virgin!John fic, and I got to thinking about it and couldn't stop. I tried my very best. This is for her.

On my webpage because it was too big for one post. Oops.

Lost in Waiting

Feedback makes me happy - multiple times. *G*

ETA: A huge thank you to everyone for reading and commenting. This is the most response I've ever had on a fic, and it's overwhelming in the best possible way. I usually respond to all comments, but I don't think I'll be able to this time, although I'll try to get to as many as possible. Thank you so much. ~Lacey

This story was just gorgeous!!! I found it to be quite calming the way Rodney spoke and treated John...just lovely!!!

“John, you have to know I’ve had a little crush on you since the day you lit up Antarctica.”

“And by little you mean huge?” John asks, finally letting his eyes open. He can’t help but smile, and Rodney’s smiling back, cautious but hopeful. John can’t imagine not wanting to believe Rodney can make everything right for him.

“No, by crush I mean love.”

Perfect.

OMG that was fucking awesome. Ordinarily I wouldn't bother to leave fb for a story that already got 7 pages of comments, especially when it's not in my fandom, but this was worth it.

I read this about 13 times in a row back when you first posted it - that's how much I loved it. I stumbled on a reference to it again today and just re-read the whole thing again. It's just perfect. Thank you so much for writing it.

Beautiful! Oh, John!

[identity profile] jadedthief.livejournal.com 2006-12-23 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, just, wow.

*sitting in glorious happy gleeful happyness and loving it*

it's just so... in depth! and realistic! and plausible! and sweet and sad and just wonderful.

Yay. You've made my entire week.

You could never have convinced me that John could make a believable virgin if I hadn't read your story! Wow, it was just great. Voices, sentiments, everything.

This was beautifully done. I'm not going to get up on my soap box and rant about what I think of John's parents, most especially his father. But I am going to say that I loved Rodney in particular in this story. Again, beautifully done.

[identity profile] moosesal.livejournal.com 2007-03-17 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. What a gorgeous story. And completely believable. This made me ache for John so much and love Rodney more and more as the story progressed. The touching thing was just really great. I have a friend who grew up in a family where they didn't show affection and she has some serious issues with touching and sex, so this felt really real to me.

Nicely done.

This was just very, very, very wonderful! I loved your McKay in all his patient and McKay way (patient and McKay don't go together, do they?). But, when it came to John, he just worked through it. And your John! I loved your John. He was just so wonderfully written and god, so emotional and it was just perfect.

Fantastic!

That was absolutely fantastic. I... I like SGA... but I've found that the fic is FAR better than the show. The show isn't that great, it's far better for the pretty, but the dialogue and the acting and the plotlines leave a lot to be desired for me.

This fic is how I think the show should be. I felt so much more for the characters than I think you can on the show.
Brilliant work.

I've only just started reading this pairing, so I don't have a lot to compare to, but this fic was beautiful and really touching.

You have both Sheppard's and McKay's voice spot on and it translated perfectly into their physical interactions.

Awesome fic.

You know what amuses me more than anything about this fic?

I mean, of course it's awesome and I hope you realize that by now. :) BUT.

Even though canonically, Sheppard has been married, I can TOTALLY SEE this still being true. He just... never had sex with her.

Oh, this was lovely.

[identity profile] anoel.livejournal.com 2007-12-24 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE this fic! Somehow you made it seem fresh and full of squeeful joy every time something a little more would happen between them or Rodney would ask a pointed question. I love how it slowly unfolds. And the structure of the fic is awesome! I love you explain who and why John is who he is and dangle clues of it in the present sections. And the end is so wonderfully cute and happymaking. You made virgin!John work! And it was freaking amazing. Thank you so much for writing!

God, how did i miss this story???

I think someone just asked about it in sga_storyfinder, and I saw it was long and a trope i loved and so i started not expecting much...and then it was good and got better and my heart broke for your john and your rodney was swwet and careful even in his bluntness.

and then i get to the bottom to feedback and see that it's YOU. Duh. I thought I'd fins a new author here I'd missed along the way but I guess that wasn't :) Though I do need to go through your fic and see is there's another one I missed!

Anyway...a very belated THANKS!!!!

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] cathexys, I didn't read this until someone mentioned it in [livejournal.com profile] sga_storyfinder, but this is so amazing. Rodney being gentle for John and John being willing enough to try. And it made me want to cry for both of them, but that's just because it worked and I wanted John to be happy. I love how it wasn't actually about John being a virgin, but it was about him being happy and how his parents are the reason he isn't. *hugs for John*

[identity profile] hivesofactivity.livejournal.com 2008-04-01 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved this - I loved the fact that it was Rodney who was relaxed and John who was not, and how serious it felt, and how you used the "trapped for days in a prison cell" as a realistic and effective device to get two real guys talking about, y'know, feelings and stuff, and most of all I loved the "lucky" speech.

This remains one of my favourite SGA fics of all times. It's beautiful and completely believable. Love it.

[identity profile] kribban.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wonderful, realistic love story. I liked John being vulnerable and Rodney being caring, in his own way. I also like how the sex scene isn't too dominant. I read somewhere 1 out of 10 30 year olds are virgins, but you never hear about it.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot21.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
OMG WOW!

This is just so amazing and beautiful! Very realistic portrayal of John's internal fight.

Thank you!!

I adore this so much! I'm actually at work (and meant to be working!) so I'm sorry I don't have time to leave something in depth, but *glee* I love this!

[identity profile] beachlass.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I love stories that take a slightly cracky premise in spin it out into something strong and delicate and intimate and sweeping - -and you've written a beautiful story here. I sunk completely into it. Thank you for a lovely evening of reading.

[identity profile] artemis-prime.livejournal.com 2008-10-01 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
What a wonderfully moving piece. Virgin John was completely believable given the background you gave for him. Both John and Rodney were in character and the flow of their dialogue was excellent. I felt so much for John, completely identifying with his situation. I am very glad to have read it. Thank-you for posting.

I'm floored. This fic is a great read, but what struck me most is how well written your John is. I can easily see myself still being a virgin at 38 the way things are going, and a lot of how you've described John's feelings and rationalizations fit incredibly well. Virginity is a very difficult thing to write seriously about and you've done an amazing job. I just wanted to give you kudos for that.
