Title: Lost in Waiting
Author: Lacey McBain
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~14,800 (I know!!)
Timeline: Set vaguely in the middle of S2 - definitely post-Runner, but with references to S1.
Summary: "You can’t have it both ways, Colonel. If you haven’t had any relationships, either you’re having the occasional one-night stand or you’re not having sex at all.”
Disclaimer: SGA doesn't belong to me. But you already knew that.
Author Notes:: [livejournal.com profile] torakowalski said she'd really like to see a realistic Virgin!John fic, and I got to thinking about it and couldn't stop. I tried my very best. This is for her.

On my webpage because it was too big for one post. Oops.

Lost in Waiting

Feedback makes me happy - multiple times. *G*

ETA: A huge thank you to everyone for reading and commenting. This is the most response I've ever had on a fic, and it's overwhelming in the best possible way. I usually respond to all comments, but I don't think I'll be able to this time, although I'll try to get to as many as possible. Thank you so much. ~Lacey

Alright, I swear I've got actually good, constructive, indepth things to say but my brain is stuck in "Squeal with Joy" mode.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and completely realistic.

Broke my heart into a million pieces. That is a sad sad story for John, and the most painful thing about it is that it fits.

Beautifully written.

I really thought I might cry, and I am so not a person who cries. How painfully cut off John is just visceral. But the part that really, really got me is how kind and loving Rodney is. That just broke me.

Thank you for the beautiful story!

Wonderful. Rodney's care for John comes through in every sentence. And I agree that John being a virgin for this reason makes sense - poor John does seem to have about an acre of personal space around him.

Lovely. I adore fics where our heros are trapped together, and the addition of a nice, rich backstory (complete with Chanel No. 5) made me extra happy. Thank you for sharing. :)

This is so, so good. You made it a totally realistic Explanation of John, and my heart ached for him--and rejoiced for him, too. Also, I loved Rodney being gentle and yet totally Rodney-like. Wonderful.

I should also say: there should be more virgin!John fics. The day the number of virgin!John fics in fandom matches the number of Rodney ones, I will be exceedingly happy. So, thank you for contributing to that. *g*

Oh.
Oh, god. Do ignore the misty eyes for a moment.
My god, but this is the ultimate happiness-inducing story. Even though I do need a handkerchief now.

Hurts so good. I loved Rodney chipping away at John's walls, saying he's already lucky, beaming "I'm right here" in neon lights, and John finally letting himself be touched.

Wow. I'm speechless. Thank you so much. Seriously, this is brilliant and *exactly* what I meant by believable virginJohn.

Rodney might be bad with people, but John isn’t people as far as Rodney’s concerned

That's such a good description of their relationship.

he isn’t quite ready to let it go even though in some ways he’s been desperately lonely for longer than he can remember and Rodney’s hand on his arm is the closest he’s come to feeling cared about in a long, long time.

And that line just broke my heart. Oh, John.

“No, by crush I mean love.”

*flails*

The scene where it all comes together and Rodney admits his feelings is beautiful and the ending is just perfect.

Thank you (again)!

This made me cry like crazy. That is just horrible. Not that the story, I mean the whole, dude, who does that to their kid. I can see this so much, the stand-off ness and the way he freaks, yeah, I can completely see this.

I would punch his dad in the face.

Okay, that does it.

This story will not be one of my recommended stories.

No.

This story solidifies you as one of my recommended authors.

Thank you very much.

Now I'm gonna go get a tissue. I know people who've been raised like John.

Very cool. You totally did plausible, and in such a painful, intricate way. Loved how Rodney is able to be sensitive for John (in his own way), and how John lets Rodney break through his personal shield (heh) and touch him. Really liked when John's dreams of Atlantis as perfect woman change. Nice pacing, good backstory and lovely emotions and happy ending.

You are amazing. I always get excited when I see a new story from you because I know it will be a treasure to be pulled out and enjoyed time and again.

This story is no exception. You've captured John's intangible aloofness perfectly. I have no problems seeing the Rodney we see on the screen as somebody huggable. John is a totally different story - despite his unflagging affability, he's not really touchable. You've portrayed that perfectly here and given plausible reasons for it. Both of the guys are almost eerily in character.

Thank you for sharing with us.

damn, that's good.

that's exactly what I said involuntarily when I finished reading this - and it's not anywhere emphatic enough, but I honestly can't find words right now for how wonderful this truly is.

*damn*, that's good!
