siegeofangels suggested an "Ancient History" challenge, and notes, "There could be stories about the Ancients, or stories about history, or stories about ancient (Ancient) history." Backstories are also welcome, presuming they're stories about events that the characters might themselves consider, well: ancient history.
It's February 2 by my watch; stories will be due Saturday February 16th at midnight eastern.
Hmm, wish I could write a historical AU, but I'm not that good ... maybe something else will pop into my mind. I'm annoyed my brain refused to unfreeze for the last challenge ... stupid brain!
This challenge sounds very tasty! I'm sure the fic that comes from it will be absolutely delicious! Thanks for admin-ing the challenges! The results always make for some really good reading! Love, max
I was told to come and suggest a challenge, instead of my, you know, nicely telling people I want to like, read fic with it in it =P
Anything to do with a character being stuck in a wheelchair. Either permanently or not. I mean, obviously sometimes it would involve angst due to an injury. But also angst-free, because it's not always this terrible terrible thing that leads to it.
Hm, I just want to be clear (and I think many versions of this could be cool.)
Are you suggesting:
1) a wheels challenge, where wheelchair is highlighted as one of the options or
2) a disability challenge, where the disability could be temporary or permanant or AU or sad or not etc or
3) a wheelchair at all costs challenge, which might including--I don't know, possibly wacky hijinks in wheelchairs or FAKE being in wheelchairs as opposed to genuine need of them or--
4) all of the above?
I ask because these all have--hm, different flavors, and like, if you're wanting to read serious/humorous treatments of disability I want to signal that, where wacky hijinks wheelchairs at all costs is something else, also fun, but different! Also, I fear for the potential of people doing this wrong (I have heard from many friends in wheelchairs how totally ANNOYING the able-bodied can be on some things) so I'd also want to prep our writer a bit, though I have every confidence.
And yes, I am in a chair at times / have to use crutches, which is why I was thinking of it one day, and then wondered why it didn't actually come up more in the 'gate universes, since it's so plausible.
And, I think, it'd be interesting to get people thinking about it? Because often people don't. And I know that one of my friends who wrote it recently hit me up for advice, which I was glad to give.
Sounds good, I like it--we'll make it a wheelchair festival! Let me know if there's any good websites out there you recommend; knowledge is power, and it might make some able bodied folks more confident (or less likely to say something dumb *g*.) I actually did a bit of disability studies quite recently, so I'll scout around too.
Great challenge idea. I think I already have BUNNIES. \o/
:D Awesome! I will take a look around for anything that might be useful. I can also maybe put a quick like, page together of quick facts that are kind of, not necessarily known to AB people?
I mean, I think my only real pet peeves tend to be stuff like, it doesn't have to be depressing to be in a chair, and they aren't necessarily the big clunky things that people think they can be (lol, hosptial chairs, yes. But you can also do really cool things in hospital chairs that you can't do in other chairs)
Oh! I like the idea of a general disability challenge; there are so many things that could be done with that! But the wheelchair-festival idea has many possibilities as well ...
I do too; I could maybe frame it as, wheelchairs or other disabilities, but let's make sure we get those wheelchair stories in there! (It can't all be blindness, right?) *G*
The danger is, of course, that there can be an aspect of fetishization to, whatever, deaf!Rodney, blind!John, wheelchair-using Ronon (though seriously, I'm sensing wheelies there), but there's a risk to everything, and I do think it's worth soliciting stories that focus on the issue--and a really fun challenge, too.
Yeah, I don't think there's any way of framing the challenge that would be able to exclude the fetishization aspect, but I'd really love to see more stories dealing with the subject in a serious kind of way. (Though Ronon popping wheelies in a wheelchair is not a sight to be missed, either.)
Oh, I mean, Ronon popping wheelies would ROCK. And John probably spent half his teenage years in a wheelchair or on crutches--horseback riding, skiing, snowboarding, motorcycle, skateboard, etc. That's not fetishization, I don't think. It really does sound fun and I think we should absolutely do it!
I'd like to suggest a "first aid" challenge. It can be about physical first aid (what's part of the mandatory 'first aid' style training for someone on Atlantis anyway? "Make sure the subject is out of Wraith range..."?), the medical side of Atlantis, various team mates providing it for each other in various situations, on missions and on Atlantis (some emergencies you'd rather take to a friend than a doctor?) and it can be about emotional "first aid", god knows everyone needs different kinds of THAT.
Anyway, I just thought it might be a cool idea, so I'm pitching. :)
I was trying not to get invested by this because my attempts at a challenge in January on another LJ was massive fail but I was smacked in the face with a plot bunny tonight that's just... too perfect for it... so I'm going to start working on something, if I get it done, I'll post it. *nervous*
*pets* Lots of people start stuff they can't finish in time, and then they post the stories anyway (to noticeboard or newsletter, which--yay, more stories!) It happens to all of us, but hey, as long as we're inspiring bunnies, that's GOOD and I totally think you can DO IT!
I wanted to suggest a 'milk run' challenge: stories about the many and varied ways that simple, domestic tasks - like fetching the milk, or borrowing a cup of sugar from the neighbours - can become ridiculously complicated in the Pegasus galaxy.
Um, OK, so I'm nearly done with my fic for this challenge, and I know the user info says to not post stories in multiple parts-- and I might be able to get this one down so it'll fit in a single post-- but if not, is two parts in this comm OK? I don't have additional hosting, so if I have to link it elsewhere it'll just be a link to a two-part post in my own LJ.
Yay, we love long stories; if the story is complete and beyond one LJ post, please do feel free to post it to the community in parts (all stories do have to be posted to sga_flashfic, so don't post to your lj; post 1/2 and 2/2 here.)
Hi everybody! I'm a common lurker that has a plot bunny nagging at her and I would like to add it to this challenge because it kinda fits.... If I understood correctly one should post their own ideas as comments to the actual challenges that were put up by the admins. And as my little bunny has a lot to do with history (I'm not so sure about 'ancient' because even though it is about ancient history it is not about the history of THE ancients??) I thought it would be appropriate to post it as a comment to the ancient history challenge...
Here it goes....It's a Ronon/John AU
I was thinking something along the lines of 'Gladiator'. Ronon and John should not know each other in the beginning. Following loosely the story line of 'Gladiator', Ronon (and maybe John as well) is forced to fight for his life in some kind of arena as a gladiator (He is a slave of course to the empire. Be it the Roman Empire or any fictional created alien empire on a strange planet, I do not care) . I imagined John being a captured 'German or whatever' tribe's leader who is very proud and will not bow easily to his new masters at which hands he has to suffer a great deal of pain (torture, humiliation, rape etc... the more shep-whump the better). Ronon takes one look at him and decides that he wants him (He's also quite raptured and fascinated by John's willpower and pride and the way he fights against his capturers). But of course (at this point of time) John would never ever allow another man to touch him without at least killing that man in the process. Their masters on the other hand think it an appropriate punishment for John to be thrown in a cell with a huge man that is likely to rape him. But Ronon is a man of honour and would never take someone without their consent so there is a long journey ahead of those two in which John needs to gain trust and to learn how to love Ronon and Ronon needs to control his raging desire for the man who's in such close proximity to him. Eventually they should end up together (I want some happy fluff moments) but the end of this story can be either happy or sad. I do not care if there is an occasional OOC-moment...in an AU like this that has to be expected. Both John and Ronon shouldn't be too civilised meaning that there can be the one or the other primitive cave-man trait to their characters (we are talking about a society that has slaves and warriors, right? Lot's of wild men running around). Maybe some communication problems can be added (created by the many different languages and cultures). I like to see all of the stargate characters filling in even the smallest roles so feel free to use whatever SG-1 and SGA folks you want. I love to read long stories (of epic proportions) so please don't make this a short-story. Also I'm a history-freak and appreciate properly researched AU's that deal with the past...(of course that doesn't mean that there has to be a ton of facts in this fanfic! there don't have to be any at all but IF there are I would like them to be correct... but in the case that this story takes place on another planet the history of Earth doesn't matter anyway so who cares?) NC-17 please?? Other pairings are also welcomed! I can't think of any (other) restrictions so I'll leave it like this...
Thanks for taking a moment to read this :)
I hope this wasn't too long and I'm not doing anything against the rules. If so, please tell me and I will be gone immediately!
Hey!--I just wanted to say, you're welcome to try offloading this bunny, but that's not really what we do here: it's too specific. This is where you can suggest a general challenge, like--"fight for your life" or "alien gladiators" or something. (Both of which might be interesting to do in light of Midway!)
I see...apologies! I hope I don't sound dumb or anything but what exactly does it mean to 'offload a bunny'?? I'm so sorry but my English isn't all that good and this phrase doesn't say anything to me :P Thanks for the advice though! I will consider posting a less specific bunny ^^
Hee--sorry! A plot bunny is a very specific idea--I want this story in which this and this and this happens. A challenge idea is broader, more of a category than an outline, if you see the distinction. I think people started calling plot ideas "bunnies" because they multiply very fast!
I see, I see...Alright, I will remember that! Thanks again for being so nice and explaining this to me :) Is my bunny-comment a bother? Should I delete it? Or can I just leave it be?
I have an etiquette question. I've been writing a story for this week's challenge, and I'm also a member of tamingthemuse, who does weekly prompts. I was just realizing that my story for this community fits the prompt there much better than the one I was struggling at, but I am aware that this community also has a 'post here 'till the challenge is over' rule, and I don't want to break that.
Then I thought, hey, I could ask--so, I'm asking: they're okay with cross-posting/post to a journal and link to the story in their comm/etc. Would it be kosher for me to post my story here (and only here, until the end of the challenge) and link to it in a 'header' style post over there? The story itself would exist here (and I'd only do the header thing for tamingthemuse; i.e. I wouldn't be trying to exploit that as a loophole or anything), as it's supposed to, the post at taming would just be a directional locator post thingie (technical term. *nods*).
I hope that makes sense! Again, under the 'no harm in asking' clause, it's totally not going to make me pitch a hissy if you say no.
Yes, I think that's fine, if I understand you correctly: i.e. the physical story lives here (encouraging comments here) but you want to post a link/pimp post to here in a community (with a link that points here to sga-flashfic.)
Julad: I think there should be a LOLcat sga challenge Julad: title challenge Julad: actually sga lolcats... I would look Julad: you could call it LOLGATE Julad: it could be a title or a picture Julad: or whatever Cesca: or feature cats! Cesca: being funny
Is there a possibility of getting an extension of the deadline? I realized on Monday that an idea I've had swirling in my head for weeks now works for this challenge and I've been working on it madly all week. While technically it's finished (and by finished I mean it has two scenes left to write and a TON of editing), it would help a lot if there could be an extension to oh, say...., Sunday at Midnight?
I'd like to request an extension, also, if possible? I only need maybe half an hour, and it's because I'm fighting with LJ about posting it, as it is actually done! *also give the big puppy eyes*
My apologies for posting incorrectly. I thought if it was more than one post long we were supposed to post it somewhere else and post links here. I will correct it. Thanks!
No, I"m sorry--it's a tricky system! You CAN post elsewhere if it's like, to a webpage on a site (a single page) with a link BACK in posted at the bottom, but if it's just another LJ, that's no better than posting HERE in three parts, if you see what I mean.
The point is not to give writers a hassle, I swear *g*--it's to try to bring readers INTO the community rather than spiraling them OUT of it. So we want comments left on the community, eyeballs traveling IN and dialogue and all that!
Okay, cool! I just misunderstood the stuff on the admin page. I got my practice on posting in parts on LJ on this one ;-) Next time I'm determined that my flashfic will be more of the flash variety!
And I totally see your point about getting people here. It's a wonderful community. You've inspired me to write most of my fic the last few months so I encourage everyone I can to come here!
Totally unrelated, but you said it was okay to contact you in a comment on any admin post. I see that there are still two links to my fic "Do not go gentle" in the memories - could you please delete them since the fic is by now available only f-locked on my LJ and not at the comm anymore?
What challenge were they for? (And also, we normally expect fiction to stay here in the community as a resource as well as be crossposted to your own LJ; if you want to lock fiction down, you probably don't want to post to the flashfiction community in future.)

Thank you for getting back to me. My entries were for the Harlequin challenge in 2005. I took down the chapters in March 2006, if I remember correctly. What little fic I write is posted exclusively to my own LJs, under f-lock, and I haven't been a member of your community for quite a while as well, so the links that remain in the memories there are obsolete by now. Can you please delete them?
