A few other points that caught my attention was you don't know how females are treated in this AU, they are not really mentioned at all almost as if the male children outnumber the female ones by a lot. Evn John was the fifth son of his family.
In a way if female births are more rare than male it would explain how this society came about females would be kept as breeders and a female child would be of more use to the poorer families like John's as a female child would not really need income or land as much as their dowery would be their body and the ability to have children.
Sons on the other hand are just another mouth to feed and find income and land for.
Another interesting fact in the story was that Rodney's father often purchased boys fro the Jade House
*the man step out that would become his Nasu, John was afraid. The man was large and his face was cruel. He had the look of a warrior that had gone to seed. John had also seen this man before, many times. He had bought many boys from the Jade House, but his taste was usually for younger males. *
That is a loaded statement as it implies Rodney's father likes young boys and he goes through them at a tremendous rate you have to wonder just how such a situation affected Rodney's outlook on the slave trade. I doubt Rodney is a innocent sexually and a few of those boys probably taught Rodney about sex and getting attracted and them disappearing would have done the job I would say.
From the sound of it if John hadn't shown a talent for the weopons he could very easily have been one of those discarded boys of Rodneys father, a blade is much more expensivce than as mere attendent.
Still Rodneys father must have made note of the type of boys his son liked as John had been bought long before and basically held until needed,John was an attempt to kept control or rein in his son from the sound of it a last ditch effort to control Rodney or compromise him, one wonders if John was bought when Rodney started his anti slave thing or when he entered the senate the question would be was John's orginal purchase a gift to a favoured son or a potential leash in waiting for a wilful one.
