Notes: This is the start of the prequel to my Elizabeth/Ronon story To Serve A Queen, and yes, I will be finishing it in 2009.

SUMMARY:
Among the Blood, Black Widows are witches who are feared and distrusted for the skill with which they can weave tangled webs to see visions of the future - or entrap the mind. But when Teyla Emmagan of Athos village is called to the court of the Queen of Atlantis Territory, she is less concerned about being misunderstood, and more worried to step awry in the complex politics of the Atlantis court.

Then, too, there is the distracting presence of John Sheppard, a Warlord Prince whose interest in her is something Teyla cannot fathom. Does he distrust her motives? Is he merely protecting his Queen? Or is his interest something else - something that Teyla must learn to accept in order to best serve her Queen, her Territory, and her own heart?

-warnings- Gen. One of the oldest schlocky romance plots EVAR, and I manage to come up with a gen interpretation. Feel free to imagine all the future bodice-ripping sex you like, though. Also contains my assumption as to why nearly everyone in the galaxy can understand each other.
-characters- Sheppard, Teyla
-disclaimer- If I owned them, I'd treat them right. It's fairly obvious from the passive contrapositive that ~p is true. The First Law of Trade is paraphrased from something the Witchwoman of the Worlds says in CLAMP's Interholic tankoubon #1.
-spoilers- "Rising" and "Hide and Seek"; takes place just before or concurrent with the first scene of the latter. There is also a mention of the name of a people from a later episode as people-Teyla-knows-of; I don't think that in itself is enough to count as a spoiler.
-word count- 2196
-summary- In a market culture, to be given largesse is shameful; in a gift culture, to fail to return a gift is shaming. Teyla does not choose to let her people be shamed.

I think this is a personal best (worst?) for me--141k of flashfiction. I would say that this story is really weird, except actually, scarily, this story is really kind of typical for me. SGA seems to be the fandom where I feel like I should preface everything I write with an apology, and so--hey, I'm really sorry. Hope you enjoy it anyway!

John Sheppard is a math teacher at Trent’s new school, and at a parent teacher conference meets Rodney. Together the two men learn more about themselves, parenthood and unconditional love then they ever expected.

I only joined this community a few days ago, and realised there was a story wanting to be written yesterday, so I wrote until I got bored. I haven't seen Atlantis, but I have read a lot of Harlequin. I found out about this challenge a couple of days ago, got the story idea yesterday, and worked out the deadline and time difference about two hours ago.
