I didn't see your comments that way at all. In fact I'm thrilled (and fascinated) with the debate this has kicked off.

And John, here, reminds me strongly of a boyfriend I had years ago who screwed with my head. Before him, I might have read this entirely differently.

Yes. That's what I'm reading in a lot of the responses.

Do you think the issue is that I've written our beloved John Sheppard as the perpetrator?

Or is the dubious consent itself that's bothersome? From the comments I've seen, it seems to be the latter.

But is it more intense because it's John? Or is it more intense because we're so deeply into John's point of view -- so the reader feels like they're the perpetrator?

I must say I still argue whether this is entirely dubious consent, since Rodney at times takes the lead. He starts the kissing. He's the one who says go ahead when John asks if they're screwing up here -- should they stop? He orders John to get the lube.
