It may not have come across clearly enough - General Sheppard was Air Force, a B-52 bomber pilot during the Cold War.
I think I missed that part and assumed his dad was Army. I forgot where you mentioned the he served with Gen Hammond, which would imply that he was USAF. So it makes complete sense that the Air Force would have taken John with his dad pulling strings to get him there. Thanks for the clarification.
