I too am a huge fan of the friendships on this show, and the John and Teyla one has been building for quite some time. I like how it's easy, they don't worry about it really, just carry on with the fight.
Choosing to write this from John's POV made it so much easier to tell. Writing trauma from the victi's POV requires an insane amount of effort and it's easy to get wrong, because everyone seems to have an opinion on how trauma should be suffered by the characters. IT's not a bad thing, it's how most people deal with fiction (relate it to themselves). But it makes writing problematic, and I end up having to spend forever dealing with the other issues, rather than tell the story.
To make a long story short (too late), it allowed me to get on with the story of John's sooper-dooper sekrut superpower.
