Wow, thanks for the detailed comments! I'm really glad you liked the story. I thought Rodney's time at Area 51 was full of possibilities -- I actually had three different ideas rising from that beginning, but this was the only one that gelled (for now). The other ideas were more device-oriented, actually.
My husband informs me that by strict superpower rules, for Rodney to phase his hands into a space to small for them and yet still be able to handle thing with un-phased fingertips is "cheating." I replied with the observation (straight out of Wormhole X-treme) that they're already cheating if they can walk through walls without sinking through the floor. Because I liked the too-dextrous-for-the-size-of-his-hands idea, too.
