Title: Telling Stories
Author: Shade
Rating: PG
Summary: Sometimes it's best to give it a good spin.

He had never wanted to do field work. Why this insane notion of going through the Stargate to other worlds had ever crossed his mind, he didn't know. Radek hugged his knees tighter to his chest. He was sitting in a tiny cave. It was small and narrow like a ventilation shaft in the rock. There had barely been room for him to turn around. His head brushed the ceiling when he moved too much. The opening was vaguely circular and about seven feet away from the back wall he was packed against. It was a very dark, confined space, and it made him feel very much like a little boy hiding in a cupboard. Of course, most little boys did such things to keep from getting in trouble, not to keep from getting their bodies ripped to pieces by hairy lizards. Well, it wasn't really hair it was more like some sort of wispy feather plumes. One could easily make an ornithological case for birds descending from reptiles. It had certainly been done with dinosaurs back home. Radek shook his head. He did not want to think about back home, and he certainly didn't want to think about dinosaurs, not at least while he was being stalked by some.

It was Rodney's fault, he decided. Rodney, with his big mouth, came back from missions with Major Sheppard and the others, and crowed about his adventures. Radek had felt slighted. Not that he had wanted to go on missions, oh no. There was just that undercurrent when Rodney spoke. He was saying, "I did such-and-such," but what he meant was, "You could never do such-and-such." Radek Zelenka was not an overly proud man, but he did have some. One too many knowing looks from McKay had obviously gone to his head. So the first time that Rodney couldn't go on a mission—thanks to burning his fingers badly on a console they had been working on, not that Radek hadn't warned him—Radek quickly volunteered. After all, if McKay could do it, how hard could it be?

Humorously enough, it turned out to be very hard, if you liked irony. At that moment, hiding in the dark, praying that the big lizards didn't have acute senses of smell, Radek didn't like irony much at all.

There was a scratching noise coming from the cave beyond. He froze. There was silence and then a loud bang that made him jerk. The sounds were getting closer. Radek had the sudden memory of that girl in the Jurassic Park movie hiding from the velocorapters in a kitchen. She had gotten away, but then again, she was a main character. He tried not to think about all the secondary characters that gotten eaten in that movie. Perhaps Rodney would have come up with a brilliant plan by now. Radek thought about that for a moment and then let out a soft snort. No, more than likely, Rodney would have been in the same position as he was. Major Sheppard would have to charge in, guns blazing, to the rescue, but of course Rodney would never mention that when he got back to Atlantis. His story would be completely different, full of daring deeds.

Suddenly, Radek saw Rodney's stories in a new light. There was no slight intended. McKay was only trying to save face. Another bang echoed in the larger cave far too close for his liking. He pressed his back up against the rock and stared at the small opening. A large, scaled ridge rose into view. A big yellow eye with purple flecks blinked at him. He jumped when the creature's head snapped around, but it was only looking at him with the other eye. He thought about how they probably had very little forward vision and then wished sometimes he could turn his brain off. The large head pulled back and Radek was given a view of lots of sharp teeth. The creature lunged forward. Radek gasped. The lizard's head impacted with sides of the cave entrance. It jerked its head back and shook off the blow.

"Ha! This is what you get for having a big head!" he yelled.

The lizard looked at him with one eye and then flicked its head to look at him with the other. It opened its mouth and let out a horrible screeching cry. Radek slapped his hands over his ears as the sound rebounded in the small space. The echo bounced back and the lizard jerked away from the hole. It twisted its head from side-to-side. The stupid thing almost looked puzzled. Finally, it came back close to the hole and made a softer growling noise. When that too bounced back, the lizard paused.

"Zatracený ještěrka," Radek muttered and scratched at the wall beside him. He broke off a piece of rock and chucked it at the intruder. The flint bounced off the thing's scaly nose. It gave him another sharp cry for his efforts. "Shut up!"

Another sharp noise made him sit upright causing him to bang his head on the rocky ceiling. The lizard jerked around to look back into the large cave before disappearing from view. He could hear more retorts and realized it was machine gun fire. The cavalry had arrived just like they always did in the films.

"Doctor Z! Doctor Z!" Lieutenant Ford was yelling from somewhere beyond his little hole.

Radek crawled back to the opening and yelled back, "Yes! I am here! Is it safe?"

"Yeah, it's gone. Here let me help you down. It was a good thing you found somewhere to hide."

Radek gratefully took the young man's hand. They may have had their differences in the past, but Radek was very happy to see him. He climbed down from his hiding spot.

"I guess you're wishing you'd never offered to take Doctor McKay's place, huh?" Ford asked.

"As a matter of fact, I was thinking what an interesting story this would make when we get back," Radek said with a small smile.

Ford grinned back. "Yeah, I won't tell him you needed help, if you don't. We can come up with a good story on the way back to the Jumper."

Radek blinked at the Lieutenant in surprise. "Do you do this with Rodney a lot?"

"He's a civilian. It's not like he's trained for this. I let him have some leeway when it's extra bad," Ford replied with a shrug.

Radek followed him out of the darkness of the main cave into the sunlight. Somehow, he'd have to work in a bunch of kids that he had saved single handedly. Rodney would like that.
