Ever since reading this for the first time, I've been wondering if they would have minded as much if it hadn't been an entity creating the illusions. Would they still have refused if it had been something like a holodeck? Or is the refusal more about the fact that there's someone here who's reaching into them and drawing out the things / persons/ situations they crave and they feel violated by that invasion into the most private thoughts? Ah - lovely story, of course. *slaps forehead*
