“I would’ve thought you’d be unconscious now,” Sheppard said as he poked his head into the empty medical lab Rodney had claimed for his own. Everybody else had taken one look at the scowl on Rodney’s face and scattered like the Wraith were still on their way, but Sheppard had some sort of weird immunity-shield against Rodney’s moods. If they could’ve decanted him into a ZPM, none of this would’ve ever happened.

“Well, since you’ve come back, the average level of intelligence down here has dropped dramatically,” he said dismissively, but Sheppard wasn’t fazed at all. He just grinned at Rodney with that smirk that always made Rodney want to throw something large and heavy at his face, just to see it truly unguarded for once

“That’s why we have you, to save all of those moron asses.”

“How touching. Why, I feel a warm, burning sensation in my heart just from hearing the words.”

Sheppard frowned in confusion, but Rodney wasn’t fooled for a second. “I’m sensing some anger,” he said calmly, like if he acted like nothing had happened, it might actually mean that nothing had happened. Their relationship was built on a delicate balance, and usually neither of them was willing to rock the boat too far, but this time, Rodney was going to tip it right over into the strongest whirlpool he could find.

He powered down his laptop and turned to face the Major with an expression that he was sure showed all of his disdain. “Well we all know how good you are at paying attention to the feelings of others.”

“It’s not like I had a choice!” Sheppard yelled, and that alone was almost enough to jolt Rodney out of his pre-comatose state, because Sheppard was all about making sure he never lost even a smidgen of control where anybody could see him.

“Oh, please, Major,” Rodney said in the most biting tone he could muster. “We all had a choice, and you *chose* to go off and play at being the Lone Ranger yet again.

“What was I supposed to do, McKay?” The mask slipped even further, and Rodney caught a glimpse of the mixture of exhaustion, grief, and fury Sheppard was trying to hide – as if Rodney didn’t exactly how he was feeling already. “Nothing else was going to work, and I did what I had to do to save us all.” He scrubbed a hand over his hair, which didn’t change a thing. “The Daedalus came along just in time anyway, so what does it matter?”

“What does it matter?” Rodney repeated incredulously. “It was luck! That’s what matters! It was a minor fucking miracle, and I’m sick of seeing your life saved by miracles because what happens when they run out?”

“So am I,” Sheppard said tiredly. “But that’s just how it goes sometimes. That’s just what I means to be in charge. No matter how much I want to live, no matter – ” he broke off and looked uncomfortable for the first time since he’d entered the room. “No matter how much I want to stay, it’s out of my hands. I can’t do something that selfish when it means I’ll be endangering other people.” His voice got quieter. “When it means I’ll be endangering you.”

“I knew the risks when I signed on to come here,” Rodney said just as quietly. “You don’t have the right to make those kind of decisions for me.”

“So what? You would’ve let me go?” Sheppard had Rodney’s least favorite smirk on his face – the one that said ‘I know you’re right but wild horses would have to drag me apart into four pieces before I’d admit it, and so instead I’m just going to treat you like you’re the wrong and hope that you agree.’ Rodney still didn’t know how one person could manage to say so much with only a smile, but Sheppard was special in many ways.

“I don’t know.” It was time to be honest, because Sheppard had been honest with him and he deserved the same in return. “But I would’ve liked the chance to find out. I would’ve liked the chance to say goodbye.”

“I know.” Sheppard sat down on one of the lab beds abruptly, as if his limbs had suddenly become too heavy to support him anymore. Rodney knew just how he felt.

“Go to bed,” he said. “You need some sleep.”

“I’ll go when you go.”

Rodney sighed. “I can’t go right now, not until the latest schematics are done running. It’ll be another few hours.”

“I can sleep here then.” Sheppard smiled wearily.

In a contest of who was the most stubborn, nobody could hold a candle to Rodney, but he gave in this time in the face of the fact that a: Sheppard was probably too wiped to even make it back to his room, and b: Rodney really didn’t feel like saying goodbye yet again. Instead he climbed up onto the narrow bed beside Sheppard, and tucked himself up against the lines of Sheppard’s body. “The next time you do something this stupid – which will probably be within the next week – I’ll…”

“You’ll what?” Sheppard asked, tracing the lines of Rodney’s shirt with his thumb.

“I have no idea,” Rodney admitted. “Stick around and find out.”

“I’m going to hold you to that,” Sheppard said, and relaxed into sleep. Rodney was just as tired, maybe even more so, but he stayed awake for a little while longer, holding Sheppard close.

This is what it sounds like to hear me seething with jealousy. GRRRRR.

This was so good. Now if I can just get you to write porn featuring them. (I know, I know. I have to, too. Damn characters. If they were in a boyband, we wouldn't have this problem.

::blinks::

Okay, if they were in a boyband, that would be *awesome*. Sheppard would totally be Justin. Except McKay's more Chris, and then we'd be writing Timbertrick, and. no.)
