Would that Halling's alienness was explored more for its sense of wonder and exoticism than just the Wow, He Doesn't Get It aspect, which is how he is so often used by the show's writers.
Considering Ronon's past experience with doctors and other entities that cut into him in the name of science (and sport), it's probably not so much a surprise. Carson passed a very important test when he showed up and operated successfully on him and that should mark him out as different... and formidable.
