[livejournal.com profile] ekaterinn suggested a school challenge: "I realised the other day what a horrible grad student McKay must have been, with that arrogance. *g* I wouldn't mind seeing the others in school too: Air Force Academy, Medical School or taking the really useful Suriving in the Peagus Galaxy 101: Wraith, Trading Rituals and Lost Cities class. *winks*"

(Please note, Beckett lovers: I refer you to [livejournal.com profile] the_moonmoth's excellent post on Carson Beckett's education; don't forget to check out the comments.)

So school 'em hard--give 'em an ed-u-cation they won't forget! Stories are due Saturday November 26th at midnight.

Edited to add: additional useful information about McKay's school and graduate education in the comments of this post! Keep that info coming, guys--thank you!!

Can I point you to this post (http://www.livejournal.com/community/mckay_sheppard/311378.html) on McKay's possible education? :)

I'd be all offended and say "Why isn't there a guide for non-Americans to the Amercan school system?" but I've never read anything that got it wrong.

Challenge suggestion for next time: "Left Behind"

It lends itself to genfic, slash, het, and Other with equal measure. What did our entrepid bunch leave behind on Earth? (Lovers, books, movies, jobs, bacon, sex toys, regrets, family, inhibitions, etc.) What did they leave behind on various planets? (New friends, new enemies, or any of the objects forgotten, dropped, or given in fair trade) Who got left behind on missions gone awry? What happens after those people and/or objects got returned?

FYI, in "Duet" there's a diploma from Northeastern University (which is in Boston, MA) clearly visible on Rodney's wall. It's right under the framed picture of him, fairly large, so it may or may not be a doctorate.

Recommendation for a future challenge: I'd love to see a ducumentation challenge like was done back in the day on ds flashfic. There was such great stuff that came out of that and man, there's got to be some great ideas out there for paperwork and emails and all sorts of stuff.

Okay, maybe it's just that I have a surfeit of crackfic on the brain, but I was wondering if the 'school challenge' includes the 'AU high school' genre? (ie. the Atlantis folks turned into teenagers in a high school setting.) I know, bad me for even suggesting it...but the muse is an insistent chicky-babe.

Oh, wow, it's my challenge idea! *grins hugely* I totally had a story idea last night that will fit perfectly into this, too. (I'll also have to write McKay the horrible grad student fic, of course!)

Hee! I can just see the scientists and engineers on Atlantis going, "WHAT? Documentation? Can't you just... make something up? All you have to do is think at it, really, and it goes."

It's gotta be the doctorate... would Rodney hang any lesser degree on the wall? ;)

Research and excellent screencaps here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/mckay_sheppard/316200.html) show that it is definitely a PhD. The area of specialization is still a matter of debate -- it looks kind of like "Mechanical Sciences". Northeastern is also a great place for research on robotics and nano-engineering.

challenge idea

If you need a challenge idea for down the road sometime, I was thinking an Exercise Challenge might work. It can work on a number of levels from sweaty running and push-ups (did I mention sweat?) or military exercises, exercises in futility, mathematical exercises, and of course the Athosian's Sticks Of Doom workout video. The possibilities are ... if not endless, definitely intriguing. *g*

After reading "Something Wicked", I thought perhaps a classic Science Fiction homage would be cool. Either stories in the styles of Bradbury, etc, or even similar settings. I don't know if this is too close to the Harlequin challenge, but I envisioned it as somewhat difefrent.
