Title: Bait and Switch
Author: Wabbitseason (
wabbitseason)
Characters: John Sheppard
Word count: 347 words
Rating: G
Spoilers: Through first season
Summary: The Wraith didn't like being caged anymore than the sharks.
John Sheppard had been to the aquarium on a school field trip. He couldn't work up any enthusiasm for a bunch of fish -- all they did was swim around. He could have spent all day at the state fair watching the local barnstormer in his dizzying aerial acrobatics. Or if Sheppard was lucky, he could have gotten a free ride on the Ferris wheel. Instead he had been stuck at the aquarium, watching the boring fish.
But young Sheppard dutifully followed the other students to peer through the glass. The fish swam around, oblivious to their surroundings. None of them seemed to mind that they were in a tank of water, instead of an ocean or river. Most of the fish were so small that they wouldn't notice the difference in space anyway.
The shark noticed though. Its tank stretched on for days, but the shark still missed swimming around with its usual unlimited freedom. The shark wanted to hunt the way it normally did, rather than taking whatever the aquarium offered it. If it was possible, the shark looked even less thrilled to be in the aquarium than Sheppard. He didn't want to be around if that shark ever escaped.
Major John Sheppard discovered the Wraith didn't like being caged anymore than the sharks. His first Wraith prisoner paced and circled around his Atlantis cell with the same uneasiness. In his frustration, "Steve" tried to reach through the cell and felt the sting of the force field. "Steve" bared his teeth with the same ferocious snap. Sheppard felt his pulse quicken, the "Jaws" theme reaching a crescendo in his head.
So Sheppard might have baited "Steve" a little. This shark talked back. He used that to his advantage, played on the desperation in the Wraith's hungry voice. Diving with sharks once struck Sheppard as foolhardy, but he would gladly face a Wraith in its cell, if it meant everyone would be safe. He would use every opportunity at his disposal, if it meant ridding the Pegasus Galaxy of its shark-infested waters once and for all.
