This reminds me somewhat of Susan Matthews' An Exchange Of Hostages (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0380789132/qid=1134677796/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-0235310-6753471?n=507846&s=books&v=glance). Those two examples including magus_minor's last entry in the original series seem to highlight that push over the edge to something darker on Rodney's part that reminds me much of the main character from the book.
Not so much the road from victim to predator but perhaps the revelation?
Anyhow, interesting addition to the series. You mention that you don't think you'll continue but I confess I'd be curious to see a companion piece from Rodney's POV.
