I'd just looked at the chess and thought of Caldwell and Elizabeth playing, but now you've said that I can see Elizabeth is the queen and Caldwell the king. Which I'm thinking makes John the Knight, as he's military, sort of the black sheep of the military, on Elizabeth's side and a threat to Caldwell.
