The characters say things like "the whales want to talk with you" and "can you hear the whales singing, each to each" (a bastardization of a quote from the poet TS Eliot) -- so there's some meaning there. I liked the idea of the Ancient characters representing the whales' language, which -- even once our team figured out that the whales were trying to communicate something important -- wasn't necessarily easy to parse.
