Pride
It started with pride. He had always been told, growing up, that pride goeth before the fall. He'd never truly understood just what that meant. He knew all about pride, though. He was a fighter pilot… an air jockey. Pride was his middle name. At least, that's what he'd thought before he met Rodney McKay.
John and Rodney had just returned for Duranda, or, rather, what was left of it. Rodney had destroyed almost an entire universe. There was a man who needed a lesson on pride, but John couldn't find it in him to even talk to McKay, much less anything else. He had listened when Rodney had come to him, "I came to you last…" he'd said quietly as if that would really matter to John. John knew, in his heart, who the real culprit was, and it wasn't Rodney. John could have stopped him from using that damn machine, but he'd let Rodney continue on, hoping against all hope that Rodney would be right just one more time. But Rodney had been wrong, and John had let him be wrong. But John had too much pride to admit his own shortcomings and so he left Rodney standing there with only the words "… if you try really hard." He'd backed into the transporter, a smirk on his face as the doors closed. John didn't see it as his fault. His own pride got in his way. But he knew, in time, he might actually learn what those words meant… the ones that whispered to him every night "pride goeth before the fall".
Envy
Two weeks after the incident with Duranda, John was surprised to see that almost everyone was treating Rodney as they always had. The incident was forgotten, forgiven, and put in the past. After all, Rodney had saved all of them on countless occasions. In their minds, the man was allowed at least one mistake in almost two years. John began to think that, perhaps he'd let Rodney be on his own for too long. Maybe it was time for him to swallow his pride and tell Rodney exactly what he was feeling.
John found Rodney in the mess hall, sitting at a table with Major Lorne. Lorne said something that John couldn't hear and damn if Rodney didn't laugh, a real honest to God laugh, that made his blue eyes sparkle and made his entire face light up. John had missed that smile. He walked towards the table and knew the moment that Rodney saw him coming. The laughter stopped, the smile was gone and the eyes became cold and almost afraid. John stopped just next to Lorne who nodded at him and then turned back to Rodney, reminding him that they were going to be playing chess tonight after dinner. Rodney had given Lorne a quick smile and John felt as if someone or something was squeezing his heart too tightly. Lorne left and John sat down across from Rodney, but Rodney barely looked at him. John's pride had cost him that and John found himself envious of Lorne's ability to bring out the more human side to the man before him. When Rodney got up to leave, John reached out and wrapped his hand around Rodney's wrist. For a moment, Rodney stood still, but John couldn't say the words and Rodney jerked away from him and left the mess hall, leaving John alone with his pride and his envy.
Gluttony
It was hunger, a painful type of hunger that lead John Sheppard into the jumper bay one night a couple of weeks later. He'd walked by the recreation room on the south pier to find Lorne and Rodney playing chess, laughing together and acting as if they'd been friends for years. John's pride got the best of him, though, and he never let them know he's seen them. His envy brought out the worst in him when he pulled Rodney off of Lorne's team and made damn sure Elizabeth knew better than to ever reassign Rodney McKay to any other team again. But the gluttony… that came a few nights after when John went on the mainland with his fellow Lanteans to an Athosian harvest celebration. Rodney sat as far away from John as he could, between Ronon and Lorne, laughing, drinking and enjoying himself. John drank the Athosian wine as if it was food and he was a starving man. All the while, Rodney watched him, out the corner of his eyes, and saw the pain that his ex-lover was in and Rodney felt guilt. He watched until John almost passed out and then he couldn't watch anymore. John let his hunger for alcohol consume him and he drank until he could no longer feel the envy and his pride was almost gone.
Lust
It was lust that made John admit his true feelings to Rodney that night in the infirmary. Rodney had been sitting with John ever since Carson had reversed the affects of the wraith virus. Even though Rodney thought John hated him now, he still couldn't leave his side. Rodney loved John, even after all that had happened between them. But Rodney always thought John's interest in him was purely sexual. How was he supposed to know that John loved him?
When John opened his eyes and looked over to find Rodney sitting with him, his pride was gone but the envy… the jealousy at having seen Rodney with Lorne… it rode his emotions, caused him act out of lust, not love. Rodney let himself be touched, let himself be kissed and caressed because he knew John would never remember it after that night. He closed the curtain in the room and let John use lust as his excuse, even though Rodney knew better now. He'd seen the raw emotion behind the pain. But he also knew that John would never tell him the truth. So it was lust that ruled the night and in the morning, Rodney was gone.
Anger
It was anger that finally drove John to the edge and held him there for days. It had been almost six months since the incident on Duranda. It had been only a couple of months since John himself had almost died from a wraith virus. Now, Rodney lay in the infirmary and it was anger that had put him there… John's anger to be precise.
After the Genii coup, John had gone looking for Rodney, to tell him about what had happened and how things had ended up for the most part. He found Rodney in his lab, talking with Lorne. John saw red. He walked into the lab and ordered Lorne out. Lorne glanced at Rodney worriedly and John got even angrier. Rodney finally told Lorne to go and was then faced with an angry John Sheppard.
They argued. Rodney told John his personal life was no longer John's concern. John yelled at Rodney that he'd never let Rodney go. But Rodney begged to differ, reminding John that he was the one who'd turned his back on Rodney after the incident at Duranda. That it was John who'd never forgiven Rodney, John who had ignored him for two weeks, and did he need to continue? John was livid. He never did answer. Instead, he reared back and punched Rodney as hard as he could. It wouldn't have been that bad except for the fact that Rodney hadn't eaten all day, was already weakened, and lost his balance. It would have still be okay except for the fact the Rodney's head hit the side of his desk as he went down, and Rodney hadn't woken up.
John sat in the infirmary, with two guards behind him, knowing full well that if Rodney didn't wake up, he'd never truly be alive ever again.
Greed
Never let it be said that love couldn't be a part of greed. When Rodney woke, after a week in the infirmary, he knew that he and John needed to talk. It was well past time. Once Carson released him, Rodney went to his quarters, showered and changed clothes, and then tracked down John in his new quarters on the north pier. Actually, they weren't new at all. They were the quarters he and Rodney had shared before the incident in Duranda… the same quarters Rodney hadn't returned to since. Rodney thought the door opened and found John standing out on the balcony.
John heard the footsteps, but never turned around. He wasn't sure he cared anymore. That is, until he felt arms around him and warm breath against the skin of his neck. Until he heard the voice of the man he loved with all his heart and soul. Until he felt the kisses against his cheek, arms turning him around, and that mouth… gods that mouth… that was greedy for everything John would offer it and more. But mouths are not the only parts to be greedy. Hands can be as well. Taking and demanding more, shirts to be torn off, pants removed, bodies moved onto softer surfaces. Greed was about taking more than was offered and John let Rodney take all he wanted that night, because it could have been so much worse. Rodney could always have not been there to be so greedy. And John believed a greedy Rodney was better than no Rodney at all.
Sloth
Rodney once told him that the Sloth was the dumbest creature in the world. All it did was sleep. John, for one, thought the sloth was a very smart creature. Sleep, laziness… that had earned the Sloth its name. John liked being a sloth at that moment, lying in bed, his arms wrapped around Rodney, as if he'd never lost him in the first place. Rodney's head lay on John's chest, one arm wrapped around him. He asked John if they were just going to sleep all day long. John kissed the top of his head and told him that was the plan.
Pride destroyed their universe. Envy kept them apart. Gluttony made them begin to see past the mistakes. Lust gave them an outlet for their pain and Anger made them see the truth. Greed made them feel it. And Sloth gave them the chance to enjoy each other all over again.

Date: 2006-03-23 09:10 am (UTC)A couple of things.
Rodney nearly destroyed a solar system, not a universe. That's a huge difference. Solar systems are found in galaxies. Galaxies make up the universe. The universe is everything (if we don't count the multi-universes of alternate time lines), and Rodney didn't nearly destroy everthing.
"Carson had reversed the affects of the wraith virus..." The word should be "effects", not "affects".
