Title: High Dive
Spoilers: None.
Rating: R
Summary: And as he laid on the ground panting, John thought -- this, this must be what it feels like to be freefalling.
Pairing: John/OMC, John/Rodney
John met Larry when he was two months shy of seventeen. Larry had long blonde hair, and pale blue eyes the color of shallow water. He looked more like a surfer than John ever did although as far as John knew, Larry didn't surf.
Larry had held out his hand and pulled John up from the ground after John fell doing a magic flip.
"Hey kid, that wasn't half bad," Larry said, slow and lazy like every bad cliché of Californians.
"Think you could do better?" John asked because Larry looked like he could.
"Maybe. Maybe later. Larry." Larry shook John's hand without ever letting go.
"John," John said.
"Want a smoke?" Larry palmed a cigarette from somewhere on his person.
"Yeah," John said, and choked his way through his first blunt even though he didn't know what it was at the time.
For John's birthday, Larry took John out to a skateboarding park. As John watched Larry fly through a U shaped course flipping aerials at both ends, John felt his pants tighten and the hair on his neck stand up at attention.
"Think you can teach me that?" John asked.
Larry smiled, his teeth straight and sharp, "Sure."
Three weeks later John had his first taste of the sky underneath his feet. Two seconds after that, he got his first concussion.
As his vision slowly returned to normal, he felt Larry's large hands in his hair. "Hey, Shep, don't wig out on me, okay?"
"No, I'm cool," John said, even though he wasn't.
Soon after that, while John's head was still buzzing from his fall, Larry introduced him to his mother.
"Rainbow," Larry's Mom said. She had sandy blonde hair with different color beads weaved into it. One of her eyes was blue and the other one was green.
Later, when John was stoned out of his mind in the back of Rainbow's incense shop, he told Larry that his Mom looked like a mermaid. Larry laughed and passed John the marijuana.
John was sitting against some kind of wooden statute of a fertility goddess that Rainbow kept in the back when Larry leaned over and kissed him-- brush of lips, dry and cracked.
"Oh," John said, and Larry laughed again.
"Are you going to wig out?" Larry asked.
"No, I'm cool," John said, still dizzy from the fall.
"I'm so stoned," Larry said and slipped his head into John's lap.
"Me too," John said, even though he was sobering up under Larry's weight. He kept himself absolutely still and took deep breaths until he got high again between one breath and the next.
The next time they smoked out in Rainbow's shop, they were sitting underneath her curtain of purple beads intermingled with crystals. Sunlight filtered through the prisms and projected dancing splashes of colors on the opposite wall.
"Your aerials in the pool today were unbelievable," Larry said.
"Yeah," John said, still dazed and drunk from the feel of the sky and sun all around him.
"Totally fucking awesome," Larry said, making a fist on John's t-shirt as he pulled himself up against John. "Totally. Fucking. Awesome." And then they were kissing, tongue and hands everywhere.
John felt the purple beads raining down on him, caressing him over and over again as he stuck his hand in Larry's pants and stroked him until he came. And as he laid on the ground panting, John thought -- this, this must be what it feels like to be freefalling.
But then Larry broke his spine in three places diving into a pool that didn't have enough water while tripping on acid.
When John went to visit Larry in the hospital, sneaking him a bag of marijuana, Larry didn't look at him. John left the bag underneath Larry's pillow. John learned a week later that Larry killed himself. They never told him how Larry managed to do it.
***
The next time that John got on a skateboard, he was just about to turn thirty-seven.
He was watching a demonstration by Tony Hawk's team for some new video game at E3 with Rodney when Tony Hawk did a 540 in the air--making the full turn and half--and Rodney let out a soft breath.
"That's really impressive," Rodney said without any hint of mockery.
It was so rare for Rodney that John said, without thinking, "I could do that."
"Are you out of your mind?" Rodney demanded.
Two hours later, when John found himself flat on his back with his hand over his eyes to shade against the same California sun, too bright and burning, he thought that perhaps he was out of his mind. But for a moment, however brief, he had been falling head first into the wide open spaces of the sky. Larry never did teach him how to fall.
"I appreciate the show, Colonel, but never ever do that again!" Rodney's head came into his field of vision. "Colonel? Sheppard?! Are you okay?"
John didn't respond immediately. Rodney was lowering his head dangerously close to John's face, and John noticed for the first time that Rodney had blue eyes, the same color as the deep end of the ocean.
