There's a lot going on. John's not just casually picking someone up in a bar with his whole life ahead of him -- he's facing death-by-Wraith. So there's a lot of fear and anger and desperation boiling under the surface.
In addition, his ego just got stung by falling flat on his face with Elizabeth -- who, being a little more attuned to people than Rodney, picked up on the hurry John was in, and the fact that meant that whoever he grabbed was going to be used for more than just sex, but an outlet for whatever was going on emotionally.
Then on top of this, it's been so long since John was a blushing virgin that he doesn't recall what it was like.
Also, he doesn't recognize that Rodney just hasn't done casual sex in his life at all. Rodney doesn't have the charm or looks to be able to pick someone up in a bar, so relationships for him have all been serious.
Meanwhile, John's had a lot of casual encounters so those dating rules are second nature. He notices that Rodney doesn't understand the rules, but doesn't realize what that means.
Finally, Rodney's a guy, and John has different expectations of guys than he does of women. There's a little bit of macho going on, a "c'mon, you're a guy having sex, get with the program." He'd be a lot gentler if Rodney were a woman.
