If Rodney had said no like Elizabeth, John would have respected it. But with both Rodney and Elizabeth he believed -- hang on for the male ego -- he was doing them a favor. Elizabeth "needed to relax" and Rodney "needed this as much as he did" or even more so. So shooting Kolya isn't the same, because shooting someone? Well, that was bad. Sex on the other hand....
Bear in mind Rodney didn't say no. He didn't even say he wasn't sure. What he said was "I wonder what this says about me." From John's point of view the answer to that was pretty obvious.
Meanwhile Rodney was as hard as a rock, had showed up ten minutes early -- the message Rodney sent was pretty clear.
Now, the point where John pushed it was at the anal sex. This wasn't a cookie to wheedle out of grandma. But at that point they were both going at it hot and heavy and John had expectations.
For Rodney though the anal sex didn't make much of a difference. He was having sex with a man, what kind of sex was academic at that point.
