I'm surprised and impressed at the depth of response to this story.
It's definitely a grey area. I don't see that Rodney is as unwilling as some seem to feel. I mean, he's really turned on and eager even as he's putting on the brakes.
John's getting a lot of mixed signals, and he usually judges Rodney not by what he says but by what he does. That's why they're friends. Most people listen just to Rodney's words, which might sound cowardly or arrogant, but John sees what Rodney does, which is pretty darned brave and decent.
