We left the ending open on purpose. To be honest, I had written a different ending in which they made it to the end, but Kat was against it, said it would work much better if it ended on an unsure note. And, in retrospect, I agree. I firmly believe that they did make it to the gate - but, even if? If they don't die on Earth or are completely incinerated in their death, they will come back there. And that, to me, is the true horror.
