And thank you for the quote. I love Gaiman's ability to make the horrifying funny and vice versa. I remember reading Stephen King's On Writing where he talks about being a big Lovecraft fan, but then also pokes fun at Lovecraft's complete inability to write dialogue.
China Mieville, whom you might enjoy reading if you haven't already, wrote a Lovecraftian short story for one of the most recent Year's Best Fantasy and Horror collections--excellent nameless creeping dread.
(they're probably not appropriate material for me to read inside catholic primary/elementary schools while I fix their computers... heh).
