"It's Dr. McKay's IDC," Sergeant Chuck Harriman said, but something felt off. He couldn't explain it, but he'd been working in the control room of Atlantis for long enough to know that when he got these feelings, he usually was right.
"Lower the shield," Dr. Weir said, and Chuck moved his hand, but hesitated. He really thought opening the shield was a bad idea. He just didn't know how to convey his feelings to Dr. Weir. She didn't know of his hidden abilities.
A black leather-clad arm reached around him, but instead of hitting the shield control, Colonel Sheppard hit the microphone. "McKay, this is Sheppard. We're having a bit of trouble getting the computer to verify your IDC. Request audible identity confirmation."
Weir frowned at Sheppard, who didn't look at her. Chuck sat in his chair, hoping she wouldn't override the colonel's request.
"Sheppard, this is McKay, authorization Bravo Charlie zero zero seven."
The marines in the control room snapped to attention. One of them handed Sheppard his sidearm. Sheppard took it and hit the microphone again. "Roger that, McKay, we're lowering the shield." The colonel nodded at Chuck before racing down to the gate room. Chuck lowered the shield, knowing that McKay's verbal code informed them he had been captured by Genii spies.
The shield disappeared, and McKay came through, followed by several people. McKay dropped to the floor and the marines opened fire. It was over in seconds. McKay stood up, and looked around him. When Sheppard approached, McKay smiled in relief. "Thank goodness you requested confirmation. I was worried you'd just drop the shield and let them in without all the firepower for backup."
"Sergeant Harriman had problems with his computer. Glad he did," Sheppard said casually. Chuck smiled, glad he'd hesitated on lowering the shield, and that Colonel Sheppard had understood.
Later that evening, when everything had calmed down, the colonel stopped by Chuck's quarters. He grinned at Chuck. "Last time I was on Earth, I talked to your cousin Walter. Good man. Same good instincts when it comes to gate travelers. Feel free to hesitate anytime," Sheppard said, seriously. "I've smoothed it over with Dr. Weir. She wasn't at the SGC long enough to trust your cousin's instincts."
"Thank you, sir," Chuck said, surprised.
"No, thank you for using your super powers to keep Atlantis safe, Sergeant," Sheppard said with another grin before he left.
Chuck smiled as he closed the door. Super powers indeed.
