If John had thought about it earlier, he would have said that nights would be hardest. But at night he can still feel Rodney braced over his back, panting harshly into the back of his neck. Or John can see - can hear - Rodney carefully kissing down his stomach, grinning and murmuring indistinctly. It's when he wakes, hard and aching and empty that's the worst.

Or perhaps the worst is when he visits the infirmary and Rodney's so still and so silent. The only noise is the beeping of the machines and the catch of John's breath.
