Actually, this piece was a pseudo-sequel to The Enemy You Know (http://www.mardahin.net/sga/enemy.html), which was (and I quote) "The torrid and trashy prison romance of Michael Kenmore, which ended up not so torrid and not terribly trashy." He married an Atlantis scientist who was captured on her first off-world mission and spent 8 weeks in captivity at the hands of Wraith Worshipers in the cell next to him, but never learned who he was until later (well, she knew he was a genetic experiment, she just misinterpreted his vague comments to mean that the Wraith had done it. She found out later that the expedition had been responsible, but I digress).

The Service of the Ancestors means their version of a religious order, ritualized worship of the unseen. It would have driven Ana (the mother) nuts, because she was originally from Earth. While she'd only transferred out to Atlantis after "The Return", she'd heard an earful about how the Ancients weren't all they were cracked up to be.
