"Just enough to make a Dutchman’s trousers" is a phrase come down from my dad's side of the family. So I didn't make it up. Something to do with the Dutch wearing very short breeches at some point, I suppose.
I wasn't going to end it with cake. I was going to stop at the previous line, but then I reread the whole thing and said 'It's John's birthday, and his uncle just died. What do you do with a little boy in that situation?' Seems like his mother would try to distract him somehow. Hence the cake.
