Title: The Call
Author:
blue_underwing
Rating: PG-13
Category: Gennish, Angst, Sap
Characters: Rodney and Jeanie McKay
Spoilers: McKay and Mrs. Word count: ~550
Series: Prequel to Reversals, This one will spoil that one.
Warnings: Unbetaed, Dyslexics Untie, Refers to trans-gender surgery
Disclaimer: I do not own Stargate: Atlantis, sadly enough
Author’s note: Recent feedback on Reversals kick started the bunnies on the prequel I always wanted to write. I’d suggest reading that one first, if you haven't already.
Summary:
It was a little more than a year after their parent’s death that she got the call. That’s how she would always remember it: “The Call”.
The Call
It was a little more than a year after their parent’s death that she got the call. That’s how she would always remember it: “The Call”. Meredith was in town and had something important to tell her. Could they meet? They had never been close, Mer having gone off to college when Jeanie was only nine. They hadn’t even spoken since the funeral. A call out of the blue like this one was… Worrying was the mildest word she could think of to describe it.
When first Jeanie walked into the hotel lobby, she’d thought Mer was late as usual. There was no-one else in the room but the receptionist and man she had never seen before. A man that on second glance was far too familiar. The shock of recognition hit her a moment later, but she would always feel she should have made the connection sooner.
“What have you done, Meredith?” Thinking back, it was the proudest moment of her life that she’d managed to make the question sound calm and reasonable.
“It’s… it’s actually Rodney now.”
“Mom’s maiden name?”
“Yeah, well, it was my middle name already so it was easy to start using it since…since I’m already published as M. R. McKay. And this way I don’t have to change most of my papers. One less thing to worry about at least, and well…” Mer would always babble when nervous. “You’re probably wondering why I did this, or how and… and… I didn’t just decide one day. I never… I never felt… felt right. And I knew I wanted to do this as soon as I knew it could be done but it’s expensive and student health doesn’t really cover this sort of thing, and with the student loans… It’s not like I could’ve asked our parents for the money, or even talked to them about it at all. You know what they were like. But when we got the inheritance… Do you think it was wrong? To use the money for this when I know they would never understand? But they’re gone and if they’re upset they can’t complain. But you’re here and you probably hate me now, either because I did this or because I didn’t tell you and…And I should really go-”
“Wait, Mer,” Jeanie reached out a hand to stop her… him (like pronouns were the most important thing here), “Just… just give me a minute. It’s… It’s a bit of a shock.”
There were a thousand questions flying through her head: When? Why? How? How could I not know? How could you not tell me? She wanted, needed, answers to all of them. But Meridith was her sister… her brother… her blood… hers… and of all these question there were two that were most important.
“Are you okay? Are you happy?”
“Yeah Jennie, I am. I really am.”

Three hours later:
“My flight’s leaving soon. I wasn’t… I wasn’t sure…”
“I understand, Mer, really.”
“It’s Rodney.”
“Mer was my first word and I’m gonna keep using it. Deal.”
“But…”
“Meridith…”
“Fine, fine! You win.”
“Good. Now promise me you’ll keep in touch? None of this not talking for over a year anymore.”
Her brother smiled and hugged her. “Yes, I’ll keep in touch.”
And he did. For a while anyway.
