The "Strange New Worlds and Alien Geographies" Challenge is a combination of a couple of suggestions: as one commentator said, "I'd like to be reminded that Atlantis is in a galaxy." Stories should be about or otherwise feature some strange new world or alien landscape.

It's July 9th; stories will be due on July 23 at midnight.

Stories should be about or otherwise some strange new world

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Is there a word missing?

Does it have, specifically, to be a Pegasus world/landscape, or do AUs that involve otherwise nonEarthly locations count?

Sorry for the randomness of this question.

I look at this site all the time and it freezes up on me constantly. I thought it was my computer's lack of memory, but as of today, I am on a shiny new computer and Livejournal is still SO slow.

Is this just me or what? God, I hope I didn't spend over a thousand dollars unnecessarily but give it to me straight.

Hi, I'm a different anonymous person, and exactly the same thing happens to me. I have a brand new laptop, and it doesn't freeze up on any othe rLJ pages or anything, just SGA_flashfic. It'll freeze for 5 minutes or so every time I go to the page, then it works fine. I don't think there's anything you can do about it though...

Following up on where [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza said "I will say this; the paid accounts are supposed to get slightly better service," I offer the following source citation for her info, from the LJ FAQ on the priority server access for paid accounts: http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=74

Yeah, it's the layout you're using. It's fine on desktops, but teeny laptops tend to choke on it for up to a minute of Winblows processing.

Yet another anonymous. *waves* Yoo-hoo!

I was just feeling a bit smug about my laptop with Windows XP and Netscape not doing this, but then I thought again. If what you describe is what happens to me, it's not freezing, it just takes a really long time to switch to a new page. Less than thirty seconds for me, and it doesn't happen often. Seldom enough that I never really thought about it, I just assumed LiveJournal was having the occasional bad day. And I can back out of the new page if I change my mind--there's a pause of a few seconds, the picture flickers, and I'm back on the main page. Hard to say what the difference is--different browser, more RAM, different ISP...

Hi, Anonymous Person #2 speaking (hee, this could get confusing fast), and that's not really what happens with mine.. the page actually freezes for me, and I can't back out of it. I have a relatively new laptop, and it's a pretty nice one, and this doesn't happen with any other sites for me.. who knows, maybe it's the browser. Right now my guess is the layout though.

Can you help? I have a story for this challenge with photos in it - I posted it via my journal and chose the 'custom' option and 'sga flashfic' - sure enough, can't see it on my journal if I sign out, but also can't see it on flashfic. What have I done wrong? When I chose 'post to community' from the flashfic site I couldn't see how to add the photos to my post.

Maybe I should just give up! Or link it to my journal, but I don't think that's allowed, is it?

It sounds like you're changing the "Show this entry to" option. You want to look for the "Post to" option. It should be the same form and formatting for posting to your journal and posting to the community, just change the "Post to".

Thank you - I don't have a 'post to' option other than to Leesa Perrie, unless I go through the 'post to this community' on the flashfic page - it's probably to do with it being a free account.

Anyway, figured out how to cut and paste it into the journal entry via the 'post to this community' option, so it's up now.

Maybe I should consider a paid account someday!

Thanks for the advice.

I have a free account, and I can post to communities from my update page; the drop-down menu of options shows up right under the date stamp, above the subject box.

Okay, I'll try that next time and see what happens - I was obviously looking in the wrong place! But then, I only have the most basic live journal skills! Thanks.

hey, can I make a challenge suggestion? I just realised that, even though this fandom is great at bodyswap and telepathy and the god-city and those classic scifi tropes, we have hardly any cyborg stories! and I mean, I wrote a little cyborg story myself to assuage this sense of lack, but I really want to see what others might do with such an idea - the team could meet alien cyborgs, someone could have an artificial body part, there could be some sort of embodied Atlantis, they could find weird technology that the characters get dependent on...there's all sorts of fun to be had where MAN meets MACHINE. Plus, it would give me an excuse to write more cyborg fic. ;)
