silverwind126, because she is a geek and said she wanted to read more of this pair.
I couldn't look at him when I said no the final time. I already knew the range of emotions that would live there. Disbelief, anger and finally hurt.
"I'm…" but he's turned his back to me and is walking towards the gate. He's holding the little creature in his arms like it's the most precious thing in the universe. I don't doubt for a second that in his, it is.
And I know it's over, the moment he places it in front of the swirling blue and sits down with a resounding thud. Us. It. Everything. I'm not his Dorothy anymore, and he isn't my Cowardly Lion. He nudges the pile of fur, adopted on a world far away. I try not to think about Teyla's description of him finding it in front of his tent in the pouring rain, wrapping it in every blanket he had and holding it close. John's description of the way it's eyes followed it's adopted owner everywhere. Aiden on teaching it how to play catch, Carson on the funny little dances it would do.
Myself on now happy Rodney had looked when he had run into my office, it's little head peering out of his jacket.
"We think it's a male. Elizabeth, isn't he great?" he tosses an arm around me and kisses me right beside me ear. I feel a paw on my shirt.
"Rodney…" I say softly. There is no easy way to tell him this.
"He eats anything, doesn't bite anyone, smells nicer then most of the marines and doesn't take up much room. God, he's perfect." No Rodney, you're perfect. Bouncing around my office with a small furry thing attached to your back. But I have to do this.
"You can't keep it."
"Why not?"
"Because it can't decide if it wants to come here Rodney"
"Oh come on Elizabeth, the practically climbed into my tent."
"That's right. Your tent that was on it's planet!"
"It came through the gate!"
"Because you came though. You can't expect me to sit here and let you force it into this situation?"
"Why not?" he snaps. "You forced all of us." It's come to that. We let the uncomfortable silence permeate the office, neither of us willing to move on.
"Rodney, what happens if the Wraith come? What happens if we run out of food? If Atlantis sinks? If the Genii take over?" The stillness of my words frightens even me. When his voice comes, it's gentle.
"You can't treat me any different then anyone else, I know. But why can't you just let us have this one thing? I don't ask for much. Ok, I ask for everything. But you know I don't expect it. But Toto was for us. I thought that you miss your dog and I miss my cat and everyone misses something…"his voice trails off. Toto. He had named it Toto.
"I can't let you Rodney. I can't let the double standard start. I'm sure it-"
"Toto. His name is Toto." The final plea. I let my mind switch from lover to leader with a silent click.
"No Rodney. No mind games. It's going home today." He clutches Toto like the comfort blanket it's become and turns to leave. "You could have said no on Earth" I call to him. He stops.
"You could have said yes now". And he walks out of my office.
Walked out of my office.
Because now he's sitting on the gate ramp crying, Teyla's arms wrapped around him and John squatting in front of him. Between them all is Toto, staring from face to face. Rodney's tear infused eyes search mine out. They can't…they won't find anything. It wouldn't be fair to give him hope.
John ends it, giving Toto a little shove through the event horizon. With the gate deactivated, the only sound is the muffled sobs. I can shut my eyes, but not my ears. It should be me on the platform with him, but I know I'm not wanted. I hear footsteps and the rattle of wheels. I must have called Carson, at some point. I can't remember when.
The sobbing stops.
I open my eyes, look into the faces of my crew, and realize I have just cast myself into the role of the witch.

Date: 2005-04-17 09:17 pm (UTC)I've now got a few wizard of oz inspired stories running around in my head. Perhaps Toto could eat them.

So very Rodney, a hundred things per minute going on in his head and how could Elizabeth resist him?

Date: 2005-04-18 06:19 am (UTC)I first thought it was a catlike creature, then maybe a doglike one but this sentence made me wonder, "Bouncing around my office with a small furry thing attached to your back." You got my imagination going trying to figure out what little alien creature Rodney brought back.
This was a great sentence "I let my mind switch from lover to leader with a silent click."
Just some minor things. There isn't a gate ramp in Atlantis. Where was Ford when the team had to say goodbye to Toto? And most of the times when you use "it's" the word you should use is "its". Say the sentence using "it is" instead of "it's" and you'll find them.

Date: 2005-04-19 07:42 pm (UTC)One honest piece of advice: you need to beta this. There are at least 20 typos in the story. Take special care to distinguish "its" from "it's".
Please don't let me discourage you or anything, I like the fact that someone is writing something else than McShep, and that you dare write unhappy endings and inconvenient emotions. Write more!
