ADMIN: F**king Freezing Challenge
Jan. 18th, 2008 09:02 pmBecause I can refuse
sheafrotherdon nothing, and because it snowed this week across the northeast, big white fluffy flakes:
Today's Jan 18th; stories will be due Feb 1st at midnight eastern.
Could we have a 'oh my god, it's f***king freezing' challenge? (I imagine there are less profane ways to sum it up, but you get the drift). The heat goes out in Atlantis; there's a freak snowstorm on New Lantea; the Team gets stuck on Hoth; there's no hot water for two weeks (this may or may not be Rodney's fault); there's a planet where night is boiling and daytime is freezing; there are rituals involving saunas and icy dips in lakes -- and you know every last one of these is really leading us to that marvelous, fantastic, wonderful chestnut of chestnuts: shared body heat. WHO DOESN'T LOVE SHARED BODY HEAT?*leaps up, waving arms!* I DO! I LOVE SHARED BODY HEAT! Er--
Today's Jan 18th; stories will be due Feb 1st at midnight eastern.

Date: 2008-01-30 09:10 pm (UTC)we don't allow crossposting to journals; either post all parts of a long story here, or you can post the link to an off-site web page that links back here.
Sorry. I'm confused. That's what I WAS doing - posting all the parts of the story to flashfic, in little bite-sized flashfic chunks- and then someone ELSE told me that I'm not SUPPOSED to be, that I'd read the userinfo incorrectly, and that I had to only post part of it and then do the rest off-site because only flashfic length stories are allowed on the board.
So I pulled down everything except the first part and posted the rest on my personal LJ.
So who is correct and what should I do now to preserve the comments I've gotten elsewhere?

Date: 2008-01-30 10:39 pm (UTC)It is true we don't allow WIPs, so it's possible that the person advising you was correct about the bite-sized chunks. Complete stories only, and if a story is LONG, as yours is, we allow two options; you can either post the two halves here, or you can put the story on a single website page, link to that, and then link for comments back to sga_flashfic.
At this point, since there were only two or three comments here, I'd say you should just post the first part on your personal LJ as well, backdated and tagged if you need to with the link pointing to the second half, and we'll get you next time. Your question about the comments makes my point--you really posted the story to your own LJ, because that's where the comments are! We don't like crossposting, because we're trying to draw readers into the community, not pull them FROM the community to private LJs.
The whole goal of the policy is to keep comments centralized at SGA flashfic, does that make sense?
Re: ADMIN
Date: 2008-01-30 10:53 pm (UTC)The story was complete and I was posting it in bits. (It was way more than 2 parts though - in flashfic terms it was about 5).
How do I link the comments back to sga_flashfic? I know I've seen it done but I've never figured out how people did it from their own LJs. I don't have a plain website as such that I could use the hyperlink to get back to "post comment" - I only post through archives.
Sorry about the confusion about comments - I'd have liked to preserve the 7 commetns that were on sga_flashfic before you deleted the post.
I posted the story first here. The comments that exist on my journal now are only there because I reposted the first part on my own journal after the annon. commenter told me I was doing it wrong. I had the link originally leading back to sga_flashfic for the first part of the story, but then when you said you were deleting the post, I went and actually put the first part up on my own LJ and redirected all the links there so the story would be complete.
It totally makes sence why you prefer people to be centralized at the comm, but I don't know how to do it and I'm still confused about the policy of multiparts.
So next time, if my challenge fic accidentally gets longer than flashfic size I should just not bother posting it here at all?
And thanks for the heads up about you being the only active mod - I get a lot of people telling me what I should or should not be doing and that how I read the userinfo was wrong. It's very frustrating, because it often contradicts each other. I'll ignore them if they're not you.

Date: 2008-01-30 11:39 pm (UTC)With this story, I assume you're committed to keeping it at your LJ (because that's where the comments are; I assume you don't want to delete it from your own journal and lose those comments) so you can't crosspost here anymore.
In future: If you have a complete story that's longer than the LJ window (which is, I forget, about 12,000 words?) you can post in two parts to sga_flashfic for the duration of the challenge--and SGA_flashfic only. Once the challenge is formally closed (by me, the mod), you can THEN cross-post your story to your own LJ. But sga_flashfic has exclusive rights to the story for the duration of the challenge.
Hope that makes sense!

Date: 2008-01-31 07:21 pm (UTC)I've had a lot of experience with this lately, so I was thinking of maybe requesting an Altered States challenge! After all, what else is this life except a dream from which we must one day awake? Or a really vivid hallucination brought on by drugs/mysterious devices/fever? Or a phase shift? Or the weird buzzy feeling you get after staring at words for ten hours and can't think straight? Or how everything fades out when you stand up too fast?
So, yes! Any piece in which the real is unreal or the unreal is real, or characters' perception is all wonky, or where Things And People Are Not As They Should Be.
