Varnon scowls, more like she is five than eighteen. "I am old enough to leave the enclave, I want an adventure! There's a lot out there to see, and I want to see it." They've had this argument before, but this time she is determined it will be different.
Later, just as she is beginning to think her father was right all along, she passes a group of humans. Most of them, like all other human men she has seen, frown disapprovingly, but one cocks his head, smooths down hair that's sticking up in all directions, and grins at her.
