Summary: Chuck takes Parrish to a family reunion in the Great White North.
When the expedition had first arrived in Atlantis, most people had taken at least a few days to really get settled in, and that was pretty reasonable. There had been a lot to get used to, after all - Athosian nomads on the floor below you, space vampires wanting to eat you, Ancient toilets. Chuck, however, had just taken it all in and showed up in the control room like it'd been any other day at work. Sometimes he wondered if that made him a bit odd.
Then he remembered his family, which really explained everything.
"Yeah, that's Uncle Tiberius," he said, pulling Dave Parrish in the opposite direction. "He's a bit... weird."
"Weird," Dave said in a curious tone. Chuck instantly regretted using the word, because like most people from Atlantis, his boyfriend heard 'weird' and thought, "I should poke it with a stick." Really, he should have known better than to bring him along to a family reunion, but it couldn't have been helped. There was no telling if he'd be Earthside for the next one, and he couldn't exactly leave Dave behind while they were on vacation together.
"Anyways! How about we grab some food," Chuck said, gently but firmly tugging Dave towards the buffet. At least he didn't have to worry about how Dave would react to the food, because it couldn't possibly be weirder than barbecued chicken-yak. Probably. At least, it all looked fairly normal when they got there. As he loaded up his plate, Chuck spotted a group of familiar faces, one of whom was practically a beacon of sanity in a sea of... insanity. Whatever. He was a technician, not a linguist. "Oh, hey, there's new cousin Maggie. She's a Mountie, too. Let's go talk with her."
"New cousin?" Dave asked.
Chuck tried to think of how to explain that, and gave up. "Uh... yeah, that's kind of a long story."
Dave did the little eyebrow-raising thing he'd learned from Major Lorne. "Really."
"Yes. Anyways, the guy beside her is Benton - he's a second cousin, and another Mountie - and next to him is his parter Ray. He's American." Chuck looked around and thought he spotted a tail sticking out from under the buffet table. He nodded towards it and added, "There's probably a wolf under there, he belongs to them. Well. Not really belongs, so much as, um. Goes along with? Or something like that."
Dave grinned. "Let me guess - that's a long story, too."
"You're starting to get the idea."
"What about the old guy in the uniform?"
"Oh, that's Bob. It's usually best to just ignore him." It took about ten seconds for Chuck to realize what he'd just said, then he slowly asked, "Wait, you can see him?"
"Yes. Yes, I can," Dave replied, with that careful tone that usually went with statements like, "This Ancient machine is blinking at me," or questions like, "Is the pollen making you feel funny?"
Chuck sighed. "You know, I think I'm going to let Benton explain this one."

Date: 2008-07-24 01:28 am (UTC)xD I've never seen Due South (though rest assured I'm going to now), so for me, this is the best line in the whole fic. In fact, it may well be the best line pretty much ever. I'm with Parrish on this one; weird definitely means "let's poke it." :3
