Plum 40 is a flying club that owned a hangar at the Laporte, TX airport. It was essentially a group of really old guys who had been hotshot pilots in WW2 (and one from WW1, with a handful of restored WW2 era craft that they constantly tinkered on, and occasionally took out for exhibitions, mainly the annual Airshow over at Ellington Field. Mostly they sat around and visited a lot. It just seemed like the kind of place that John would have been attracted to as a kid, for a whole lot of reasons.
I've had John living in Houston in a couple of my other stories, and possibly ascended in another, so this is probably a bit of misplaced spackle, possibly a red herring. I haven't decided!
