Disclaimer: Radek, Rodney, Carson, Shep, Elizabeth, Ford, et all belong to somebody who's not me, but I'm sure you already knew that.
Notes: Um... it's long for a flashfic at 2,328 words, but the set up took a bit. I don't think you'll mind. And so far every single [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic I've written has been a Zelenka story more or less. Go figure.

Radek sat indian style on one of the beds in the infirmary. His elbow was perched on one of his knees to let his arm prop up his chin. Radek was aware that he probably looked like a sulking child. Beckett standing over him with his arms crossed looking like Ward Cleaver getting ready to scold the Beaver wasn't helping that image much. Rodney was sitting in a chair beside the bed chewing on his lower lip. Radek couldn't help but cast Rodney as the mischievous Eddie in his mental scenario. That left Major Sheppard, who was leaning on the far wall looking amused, as Wally. And of course, Weir took that moment to step into the room to fill out the cast. Radek glanced over at Carson and cursed him for being lucky enough to get a fictional wife like Weir.

"What happened?" Elizabeth asked, looking at Carson. Radek was impressed that she had easily dismissed the rest of them from giving her a straight answer.

Beckett replied, "These two fools tried to kill one of your best scientists."

"Okay, that is not true. It's totally false, in fact."

"Rodney," Elizabeth said in a stern voice, "be quiet. I'll get you in a moment."

Radek swore he saw Rodney do an Eddie-like gulp. He rubbed his face to hide his smile while Carson continued.

"They were trying out some device that only works on someone with the ATA gene. The problem was, the two of them were too busy arguing about who would actually use the device that they failed to notice Radek. He went to check something on the machine and ended up getting caught in it. It started up, and since he doesn't have the ATA gene it almost electrocuted him. Or at least that's the story I've managed to piece together from the three of them. Perhaps you'll have better luck. They're all being stubborn."

"And here I thought you could out stubborn anybody, Carson," the major said in his usual languid way.

"Major, how could you let this happen?" Elizabeth said, zeroing in on him.

The major stood a bit straighter and lost his amused look. "It was an accident, pure and simple. I'm just glad that Zelenka's okay."

Elizabeth glanced at Carson who said, "Aye, he's fine. There are some minor burns on his torso and he lost consciousness for a few moments, but he should be fine in a day or so providing he gets some rest."

The last was stressed while looking at Radek. He nodded softly to Carson and started to get up.

"Wait a minute, we're not done here," Weir said. She'd never once had to use that tone of voice with him before. Rodney was lucky if he only heard that tone once or twice a day, but never Radek.

"Doctor Weir, whatever information you need, you can get it from these two. Feel free to beat them with sticks if you like. Right now, I am going to bed in my own room. You will likely not see me for a few days as per my doctor's orders," he said looking at Carson, "Now, if you all will excuse me?" With that he shuffled out of the infirmary and went straight to bed.

Radek woke to a pounding at the door. He rolled around a bit on the bed and tried to hide his head under the pillow but the caller didn't seem to care. He was pretty sure it was Rodney. No one could be so obnoxiously persistent. He crawled out of bed and made it to the door. It was barely open before Rodney barged in.

"Well?"

Radek leaned heavily on the door jam and rubbed his pounding head. He felt like he'd had far too much vodka the night before. It took him a few moments to realize it was probably the after effects of the machine.

"Well what?" he snapped at Rodney.

"The machine said it was supposed to enhance mental capacity to the point of telepathy, or at least that's what I believe they meant. The Ancients had a tendency towards bad poetry instead of simple explanations. So, what am I thinking?"

"I do not know, but I can tell you what I'm thinking. It's not very pleasant."

"Oh come on, you still can't be feeling bad, you've been resting for three days!"

"What?" he asked, turning to look at his friend.

"You hold up in here for the past three days. I could have sworn you'd be back in the lab the next morning despite what Carson said, but you really took it to heart didn't you?"

"What are you talking about? I went to bed just a little while ago. Just because you are impatient doesn't mean you can come in here and wake me up, Rodney."

Radek knew something was wrong when Rodney's usual smirk slipped from his face. "Wait, you mean you've been asleep this whole time?"

"Has it really been three days?" Radek asked and rubbed his aching head.

"I think maybe we should go down and see Carson, you look terrible. He said you'd be okay, and you look worse."

The concern on Rodney's face worried him. He walked into the little bathroom connected to his room. The light coming on made him flinch, and what looked back at him from the mirror didn't help much.

"Right. Back to the infirmary."

Normally, he would have been embarrassed by having Rodney help him down the hallways of Atlantis, but the pain in his head had increased so much it was hard for him to focus on anything much less where he was putting his feet and what direction he was going. The worried crease of Rodney's mouth got tighter and tighter as they went on. That should have alarmed him, but he was too lost in the pain to notice much else.

In the infirmary, Carson descended on them like a hurricane the moment they stepped through the door. In between yelling at Rodney, the doctor was cursing himself for not following up on Radek's condition. Radek wanted to let him know that it wasn't his fault, but he was too busy trying not to vomit from the intense pain that had settled on his brain. All he managed was a weak pat on the arm for the man. Carson stopped yelling for just a moment and his eyes softened.

"Don't worry, Radek, we'll fix this," Beckett said and Radek barely felt the prick of the needle in his arm.

The room was distinctly fuzzy when he woke up again. Radek felt like he was floating. Rodney was standing over him saying his name but there was an odd lapse in time from when he saw Rodney's mouth move until he actually heard the voice.

"Carson has been hording the good drugs I see," Radek mumbled.

"Are you still in pain?" Rodney asked looking around for someone to yell at.

"Yes, but I don't seem to care."

"He really is holding back the good stuff," there was an odd tone in his voice.

Thanks to the drugs it took him a few moments to figure out just what was upsetting Rodney. The feeling of floating had not gone away. Mostly because he was actually floating about two feet above the bed. Carson ran in at Rodney's bellow and stopped in his tracks.

"Now that's something I've never seen before."

"Did we bring a priest? Holy water?" Rodney was yelping.

"I'm not possessed!" Radek grumbled. Slowly he descended until he felt the bed beneath him.

"Well, excuse me if your sudden ability to defy gravity has me a little upset."

"Carson...Carson I can't think," Radek said.

"If cut back on the morphine..."

"I will manage. We have to figure this out."

By the time the medicine had started to wear off, the pain in his head had returned, and the room was suddenly full of people. Weir and Sheppard were there along with Teyla and Lieutenant Ford, but there were also security guards and several scientists most of which he only knew peripherally. Everyone was yelling and arguing. It wasn't helping his headache.

"Please, everyone...please..." he said, but his voice was lost in the firestorm around him.

The pain in his head spiked, and he closed his eyes. Radek felt a pressure he had never known before and suddenly there was silence. When he opened his eyes the room appeared empty, until he looked down on the floor that was littered with surprised bodies. Rodney and the others were lying all on top of each other like discarded toy soldiers, and they were all staring at him with gaping mouths.

"What happened?" he asked.

"I don't know," Rodney answered, climbing to his feet looking confused. "There was this strange force or something that just shoved me down."

"Me too," Sheppard said, climbing to his feet and helping Weir up. The others were all also getting up off the floor and there was a series of nods as they all agreed.

Radek whispered, "Oh dear."

"What?" Rodney asked.

"Rodney, you said the machine enhanced mental capacity."

"Yes, it's supposed to give telepathy."

"What about telekinesis?" he asked realizing the pain in his head had decreased somewhat.

"The ability to move objects with your mind?" Rodney asked and his face cleared of confusion. "You mean?"

"Well, you were being very loud."

"That's...that's amazing!"

Weir crossed her arms and interrupted. "What's amazing? Rodney, what's going on?"

"Radek pushed us down. He moved us with his mind!"

"You mean he's suddenly turned into Jean Gray?" Ford asked. The others all gave him scathing looks. "What?"

"Do it again!" Rodney said looking around and grabbing a pen out of Carson's lab coat pocket. "Here. Move this pen." He sat the pen down in Radek's lap.

Radek stared at the instrument for a moment and it began to lift off the bed and into the air. Rodney grinned. Some of the scientists gasped. Major Sheppard looked unimpressed. When Rodney caught that look his smile faltered.

"What? How can you not be impressed by that?"

Sheppard shrugged. "He moved all of us just a second ago, Rodney. One little pen isn't a big deal."

"Fine." Rodney looked around and pointed to one of the other beds. "There that's big move it."

Radek looked at the bed for a moment and suddenly it wheeled across the room and started doing doughnuts in the middle of the infirmary. His headache eased even more.

"Big deal," Sheppard said. "It's on wheels, that can't be hard."

Rodney crossed his arms over his chest and gave a put upon sigh. "Okay..." He looked around the room and then smiled evilly at Carson. "Pick Carson up. You shouldn't have any trouble. You were making yourself float a little while ago, and you were drugged to the gills then."

"What?" Carson barked.

"Rodney, I don't think that's a good idea," Elizabeth said.

Radek ignored them and focused on the Scot. In a second, Carson gasped and floated into the air. The scientists around him backed away as he started to tilt to the side. Radek carefully turned him into a complete circle making him do a cartwheel in mid-air. Beckett was making all sorts of yelping and surprised noises.

"Radek! Radek! You put me down this instant! I am not some kind of ninja in a bad kung fu movie!"

Radek smiled and gently put the doctor back on his feet. Carson looked ruffled and shot daggers with his eyes at Rodney. Radek realized that his headache was completely gone.

"There? Impressed now?" Rodney was saying to Sheppard.

"Okay, I got to admit that was kind of cool."

Rodney turned back to look at him. "Do something else!"

"Rodney, I think that's enough demonstration for one day," Weir said.

Radek tried to lift a jar across the room only to have nothing happen. He leaned forward and concentrated with all his might. Carson laid a hand on his shoulder.

"What's wrong? Headache bad again?" he asked, confusing Radek's expression as pain.

"No, the headache is gone...and I can no longer move objects." He looked down at the pen in his lap where he'd dropped it after the first demonstration. It didn't budge. "Each time I moved something, the headache eased. Now I have no headache and I can't seem to move anything else."

Rodney walked over and stared at the pen as if he could help Radek move it by sheer will. The pen still did not go anywhere. They glanced at each other.

"Maybe you just over did it?" Rodney said.

"Or maybe he only had a limited ability and you just used it up getting him to do parlor tricks," Carson said with a grin.

Rodney looked at Radek and he shrugged in response.

"We'll just have to put him back in the machine."

"NO!" Radek, Carson and Elizabeth said in unison.

Rodney frowned. "What kind of stupid machine only gives you limited telekinesis?"

"The kind that gets abandoned to the back of a lab covered in a tarp, if you'll remember," Sheppard replied.

"Maybe it'll work better on someone with the Ancient gene..." Rodney said looking over at the major.

"Forget it, Rodney. I'm not getting in that thing."

People started filing out of the room as the pair began to argue. Elizabeth patted him on the hand before she left. Rodney and Sheppard left in mid-argument. Radek only got a little wave from the major in acknowledgement. Finally, the room was empty except for Carson and himself. Carson put his hand back on Radek's shoulder.

"We should run some tests to make sure you're alright."

"But I feel fine now."

"If you're thinking that I've forgotten the fact that you just spun me like a top, think again." There was a dark little shine of glee in Carson's eye.

"Great," Radek said and flopped back onto the bed.

Heh... A friend of mine has taken to calling him Zippy... which I found so cute I started calling him that too (and pairings with Rodney are now called McZippy between the two of us, which is just all kinds of wrong.)

Well, *geeez*, now you've got me all curious. Is it some chemical that built up in his brain and got used up when he did the telekinesis thing? And will it come back or is that it? And what happens to someone who *does* have the ATA gene?

*poke poke*

(I suppose this is a sign of a good story, eh? *g*)

Ooh, I liked it. :] I'm kind've siding with McKay here, though, someone else with the gene needs to try it!
And totally OT here, but- love the way you wrote the rating of the story... I laughed when I read that. :P

Yeah, I kinda see Carson as the oldest brother. Most of the time he's an adult, but every once in a while he gets into trouble, too. (I highly recommend nebbyj's story "Another Day in Paradise" on ff.net as a very funny example of this.)
