Title: Not Sure
Author: Sethoz
Rating: PG
Category: Gen. Angsty/Creepy
Challenge: The Enclosed Spaces Challenge
Warnings: Slight Spoilers for The Storm/The Eye
Notes: This mutated. It was supposed to be some McKay/Sheppard. Instead it got darker and creepy and Sheppard mostly left the plot. 555 words.
Summary: Rodney isn't so sure about Atlantis.
Not Sure
Sometimes Rodney can actually see the walls closing in on him. When he's alone in his lab or his room he can see the walls creak and tower over him. At these times his breathing increases and becomes shallower. It's a panic attack reaction he knows, but the moment someone else steps into the room the walls pull back and Rodney's breathing evens out.
Atlantis doesn't like him. He's not sure why. He knows that if anyone has a chance of discovering her secrets it will be him. Perhaps that is why she mistrusts him, punishes him whenever he is alone. She has been alone for so long that she doesn't want someone to just waltz in and unlock all her wondrousness secrets, especially someone like him – who isn't even a descendant of the Ancients, who doesn't even the 'magic gene' naturally.
At some level Rodney knows that to think of the city as a sentient being is stupid. That the walls aren't really closing in on him and it is really just his nerves. He tells himself this every time he's alone.
That doesn't stop the walls closing in on him. Doesn't stop the panic, the realisation that if he can't get over this, he won't be able to solve the great cities many secrets.
One of these days they will find him out.
Find out how the city hates him and that will be that. You can't be head scientist if your subject can't stand the sight of you. But he can't not be head scientist. The Czech is good yes, very good. Just not good enough. So he pretends. And mostly, he's good at it.
He's learnt to ignore the walls, the way the room seems suddenly smaller. He's even able to fall asleep in his lab. It becomes almost a game between him and Atlantis. New ways of trying to scare him and new ways of overcoming it.
Rodney isn't sure when the atmosphere changes. He can't pin down a date when the walls no longer look quite as threatening when they loom over him and the quiet of his lab becomes almost relaxing. He isn't sure when the game becomes a game. Perhaps it was when he saved Atlantis from the Genii? On the balcony, with the wind and the rain lashing down at him he had thought for a second that he had heard a cry... but no. Atlantis wasn't connected to him like that, she wasn't even alive, at least not in the way humans termed living. Not in the way scientists termed living.
Some days Rodney isn't so sure.
He's seen the way she reacts to the Major and many a time he has to bite the inside of his mouth in order to stop the jealously. This seems to amuse her. Another thing he isn't sure about is the way he thinks Atlantis has 'moods'. Feelings. The Major may light her up, get her all excited but he is the one who keeps her running, who looks after her and fixes her.
One thing he is sure of though, is that he will never bring any of this up in public. Not even with the Major, who is most likely to understand what he means.
Some things are best kept between a Doctor and his Patient.

Date: 2005-03-09 03:28 pm (UTC)I knew I'd like it when I read that. =) And then there was this:
The Major may light her up, get her all excited but he is the one who keeps her running
...which may be the best characterization of the relationships Sheppard and McKay have with Atlantis that I've ever seen.
Very cool!

Date: 2005-03-09 05:19 pm (UTC)I really like the idea of a 'relationship' between McKay and Atlantis. Especially since I always felt that he really loves Atlantis in a way. He is willing to protect Atlantis against all intruders and I think he would mourn her loss if anything aver happened. Not only mourning the loss of this source of knowledge but really the loss of the city.

... This is the way plot bunnies are born, you do know that right?

Date: 2005-03-09 10:34 pm (UTC)For me this was the way a songvid was born. I made the vid because primarily I wanted to talk about McKay losing Sheppard, and then there were all these scenes in there that are just as much about losing Atlantis.
But hell yes, I did cry when the Titanic sank because it was such a pretty ship damnit! And it broke down right in the middle. That broke my heart. :)

Date: 2005-03-09 10:40 pm (UTC)I cried too. Though they soon changed into tears of laughter when my sister turned to me and said; "It Sinks???"

Date: 2005-03-09 10:43 pm (UTC)Man, that was shocking, wasn't it?! *g*
And so unexpected.
I was just laughing when Leonardo sank. "No, you can't get on my life saving door with me!" :)

Date: 2005-03-09 10:46 pm (UTC)*bg* Oh yes, when it hit the iceberg it took me completely by surprise ;)
I laughed at Kate at that point; "I'll never let go... oh you're dead. Off you go then." *pushes him away*

Date: 2005-03-09 10:54 pm (UTC)"Byebye sweety! Uh, they've come to save me. Over he~ere!"
*paddles happily towards safety"
Oh yeah, that was one funny movie.
Well, aside from the poor broken down Titanic that is!
