Summary: "Mphmhphm," John managed to non-answer because it was too much of an effort to raise his head off the mattress to be more coherent.
He loved it that Rodney understood him anyway.
"What did you do to him?"
John was lying face down, spread-eagled on his bed after a twelve hour stint where he felt like he had single-handedly built a Town Hall for the Athosians. He was dirty, tired and hurting in heretofore undiscovered places. When he had heard his door swish open, he had been hoping that it was Rodney.
Just not Rodney... yelling.
"Mphmhphm," John managed to non-answer because it was too much of an effort to raise his head off the mattress to be more coherent.
He loved it that Rodney understood him anyway.
"What do you mean you don't know what I'm talking about?" There was a slight dip on the bed and then Rodney was jabbing him in the shoulder blade. "Are you even listening to me?" he demanded.
John managed to lever himself up and over so he was lying on his back. He let his arms thump to either side. One of his hands ended up against Rodney's thigh and he spread his fingers and squeezed gently. It was about all he could manage.
"You're going to have to let me buy a vowel here, McKay," he sighed, arching an eyebrow.
"You knew Ronon was going to be helping me check the desalinisation cabling at the ocean side today and last night you let him watch that movie!" Rodney spluttered, moving so he was out of John's reach, but still in poking distance.
"What movie?" John raised his head slightly and rubbed his eye with a fist. He saw Rodney pause and his mouth soften and knew that he had derailed him somewhat. Rodney had confessed only a few weeks ago to being a sucker for when John did tired child things. John had no idea he did tired child things, but he wasn't above playing the part if it would get him some peace at the moment.
Rodney had worked himself up too much though to be led astray and his mouth firmed down into a thin line again. "Jaws," he said simply, as if that explained everything.
"So?"
"So? So? Ronon won't go near the water today!" Rodney threw up his hands in exasperation.
John couldn't help the chuckles that escaped him, despite the fact that it was oil on the hardy little Rodney fire that was going on. "He what?" John gasped after he was able to reign in his giggles slightly.
Rodney stood, pacing the room. "He got all interested. I tried to tell him that were no sharks in the Pegasus Galaxy and he just said 'how do you know?' I tried appealing to his manliness but he said that it didn't question his courage to avoid a creature with more than one row of razor sharp teeth and cold black eyes. He also said what was worse was that a shark wasn't particularly interested in eating humans, but took a bite out of you just to check what you were. Then he showed me pictures."
"Of what?" Despite his exhaustion, John had sat up, too entertained to really worry about his aching muscles.
Rodney blinked at him for a second. "Of shark victims. He'd pulled stuff from the encyclopaedias we had on-line."
John watched Rodney sink onto the bed, looking completely defeated. He laid a hand on Rodney's shoulder and shook him gently. "Uh, Rodney, why didn't you just get someone else to help you?"
Rodney turned his head slowly, colour flushing his features, looking appalled. "You don't think I was going anywhere near that water after that do you?" he exclaimed, as if the very idea was ludicrous.
John leaned up far enough to circle his arms around Rodney and pull him backwards onto the bed. "How about I tell Zelenka he has to do it tomorrow?" he offered.
Rodney buried his face in the crook of John's arm.
"Mhphnmmhum." Rodney agreed and John understood him perfectly.
