Summary: Elizabeth writes a congratulation memo

Elizabeth Weir had decided some time ago that she would write notes of congratulation to all personnel in which to congratulate those who accomplished something. She’d written several notes so far, but this one was the hardest. She had to congratulate Colonel Sheppard’s team for establishing a new trading relationship with the natives of MP-743. This was important, no one could argue, but after all that has happened to them, after all they had done, she’d rather congratulate them for not running into trouble.

With a sigh, she started typing: “Today I wish to congratulate SGA-1 for signing a trading agreement with the natives of MP-743. Colonel Sheppard, Dr. McKay, Teyla and Ronon have obtained a large quantity of food in exchange for medical assistance.” She clicked the “Send” button, satisfied with her work.

Carson Beckett was working in his lab, trying to catch up on the paperwork, when he heard a loud thud followed by Dr. Biro’s angry voice, “Crap!”

He smiled. At least they’d learned something from him and his little trap had worked. To some degree…

“Is everything okay there, Dr. Biro?”

“Yes. What was that?”

“That was th’ … umm… new microscope box.”

“What was it doing there?”

“I… had nowhere else t’ deposit it.”

“And you thought it would fit well in front of the door…”

“Obviously.”

“I’m not gonna comment on that. Have you checked the messages?”

“Messages?” Carson frowned. He never checked those. As far as he was concerned, they were useless. He’d tried to send some to those who were due for their medical exams, but it hadn’t worked. *I didn’t get it.* they’d said. The little buggers had dared to suggest that he didn’t know how to send them. “No, I haven’t.’

“Well… read here.” Dr. Biro opened the message on her laptop and Carson had no option but to read it. After a few seconds, he was staring at his colleague. “Well?” she inquired, with an angry look on her face.

“I don’t understand why… I mean, medical assistance is usually promised. Don’t understand why-”

“You don’t? Of course you don’t. You come here, in the lab, whenever you want and I have to stay in the infirmary.”

“I still don’t-”

“They’re taking all the doctors! I’m left to work with…” Carson cringed, hoping that the woman wouldn’t say ‘incompetents’. She did resemble Rodney in a way.“… the newest nurses.”

“Dr. Biro-”

“I don’t care if they bring back coffee! I don’t drink it anyway. And I …” Carson stopped listening to her. She didn’t listen to him, anyway – just like Rodney. This thought was quite discomforting, but he couldn’t stop comparing the two. While talking, she had turned red and was pacing back and forth in front of him. He wondered if the reason she’d came to tell him the news was because he was the closest to her office, or because he was her boss and she was following the Chain of Command rules.

“And all the people in my infirmary are… “ Well, obviously, not the Chain of Command option. And then he remembered… [dots] Everybody else was off-world.

“Dr. Biro-”

“I need to add that-”

“Listen t’ me! I’ll talk t’ Dr. Weir about it.”

“You do so!” With that, she left, a little upset that he hadn’t let her finish.

Carson made a mental note to himself to talk to Elizabeth about this. It had to stop.

Radek Zelenka was working in his lab when his laptop started beeping. He hurried over to the table to check the new message. With a frown, he muttered, “They bother me with this… this…”

“Is everything okay, Doctor?” Miko stopped with a large case in her arms, obviously expecting an answer.

“No, it’s just that…”

She put the case down and read the message on the screen. She smiled, happy that Rodney’s efforts had been acknowledged. She had always admired the Canadian and honestly hoped to be his assistant one day.

“Of course, you’re happy for him!”

“Dr. McKay is working hard and he -”

“Ruins everything I start doing. See how peaceful it is when he’s away?”

“You should be happy, then.”

Radek responded with a puzzled look, “What?”

“If the negotiations he’s involved in go well, he’ll be sent away more often.”

The Czech glared at her. “Perhaps you should join him!”

“You were mentioned in such a memo.”

“That’s because Elizabeth realizes that we work hard and she doesn’t have to work with that… that… look!” He took a small paper from his desk and showed it to Miko. She recognized McKay’s writing:

Don’t start the generator!

You won’t be able to control it.

I’ll take care of it when I get back.”

Miko smiled. Most of Dr. McKay’s notes were like that. Come to think of it, he never praised anybody – but he did show his appreciation by not berating. If Dr. McKay didn’t say you did something wrong, then that meant you did it right. Radek interrupted her thoughts…

“This has to change. I will take care of it.”

Rodney was in his quarters. He’d tried to rest, but something interrupted him every time. Now the dumb laptop had started beeping. It was a message from Elizabeth. He read it twice and still couldn’t believe it. He grabbed the laptop and headed for Elizabeth’s office. It was outrageous. After all that he had done, after all the suffering he endured on this mission, she wrote that little note? She obviously didn’t know that he’d had to walk for seven miles to get to that little village with its nosy little people. And all they’d done was to ask dumb questions and praise Sheppard. That pathetic thing they’d offered as a meal was less than his cat would eat and he wasn’t even going to mention the taste. Then it had started raining – through the roof. The Chief Scientist of Atlantis had been forced to stay in a little room with water dripping through the roof. He was getting a cold, his back ached and his head wouldn’t stop hurting without Carson’s little pills.

And all she had to say was that they’d signed a trading agreement.

He reached her office and entered without so much as a knock “Elizabeth, we need to talk!”

She looked upset. No – not upset, angry.
“ Rodney, if you came to complain-”

“Actually, I did. About that memo-”

“Get out! Now! I’ve had enough of this!”

Rodney was shocked. This was really out of character for her.

He left the office and headed for the main console. The new Canadian guy with an odd name was there.

“What’s wrong with Elizabeth?”

“Don’t know. Dr. Zelenka was here a few minutes ago. And Dr. Beckett.”

“Did she say anything?”

“I heard her tell Beckett that she’s going to stop writing the congratulatory notes.”

“What did he say?”

“He said: *That’s what I was asking for. There’s no need to… I’m leaving!*”
